Deacon John Evancho has helped Fr. Sid and the parish for 3 weekends. Deacon Timothy Tkach will be with us today. Please extend a warm welcome to Deacon Tkach for his help. Remember a prayer of thanks to Fr. Thomas Loya and Annunciation parish in Homer Glen, IL for sharing their deacons with us.
The Knights of Columbus men continue to assist Fr. Sid 24/7 until he gets back to living independently again. Also thanks to those that have brought meals and provided other nurturing care to Father Sid. You are current day saints. God and your guardian angels must be extremely pleased. Dormition Icon
The Icon of the Feast of the Holy Dormition is on the front cover of this week’s bulletin.  Many are present at the Dormition of the Beloved Theotokos.  In the foreground we see St. Peter (dressed in plain clothes) incensing the Theotokos’ body and we see St. Paul (also in plain clothes) at the foot bowing in her honor.
Behind the crowd in the background we notice there are three Bishops present.   The bishops traditionally represented are James, the brother of the Lord, First Bishop of Jerusalem and the original author of our Divine Liturgy, Timothy Heirotheus, and Dionysius the Aeroagite.  They are shown wearing episcopal vestments.  Christ is standing in the center looking at His mother.  He is holding a small child clothed in white representing the soul of the Virgin Mary.  With His golden garments, the angel above His head and the mandorla surrounding Him reflects Christ in all of His divine glory.   Above Christ the gates of Heaven are standing wide open waiting to receive their Queen.

Events Calendar

  • The Dormition Fast continues through August 14. The traditional rule is a strict abstinence with mitigations for Saturday & Sunday and the feast of the Transfiguration. The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season (Canon 880, § 2). This fast may be observed voluntarily but it is highly recommended for your spiritual & physical wellbeing.
  • The next healing service is this Wednesday, August 10. Invite your friends and family.
  • Monday, August 15 is a holyday of obligation – the Dormition of the Theotokos.
  • Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine in Olympia, WA is on August 12 & 13. If you are traveling to the northwest you may want to add this to your itinerary. Their newsletter is in the hall.

Paraklesis
This ancient ceremony is a service of supplication for the welfare of the living. As we use it here at St. Athanasius parish the Paraklesis is addressed to the Most Holy Theotokos whose intercessions are sought through the chanting of the supplicatory canon together with psalms and hymns. The Greek term, Paraklesis, is found in the bible 29 times. It reveals that it means, “to call to one’s side”. Its usage shows that according to the context, it means to entreat as in “I beseech”, admonish as in “I exhort” and consolation as in “I comfort”. The service was initially composed after the 4th Ecumenical Council, held in 451 in Chalcedon a city of Bithynia in Asia Minor. The Paraklesis was further composed in the 9th & 13th centuries. The Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos is emphasized during the Dormition Fast season.

Events Calendar

  • The Dormition Fast is from August 1 through August 14.
  • The solemn feastday of the Transfiguration of Our Lord is August 6th. Jesus strengthened the apostles’ faith by showing His Divine Glory after He had foretold about His Passion. Father Sid will be blessing first fruits on Friday evening, August 5th, Saturday’s feast day at the 5 PM liturgy and next Sunday’s 10 AM Divine Liturgy. The reference to build three booths for Moses, Elijah, and Christ may be for the Feast of Tabernacles when the Jews would be camping out in the fields for the grape harvest
  • The next healing service on Wednesday, August 10.
  • Monday, August 15 is a holyday of obligation – the Dormition of the Theotokos. Flowers will be blessed on that day.
  • Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine in Olympia, WA is on August 12 & 13. If you are traveling to the northwest you may want to add this to your itinerary. Their newsletter is in the hall.

Prayer List
One of our cantors, Marcus Loidolt, had emergency surgery last Saturday for a burst appendix while visiting family in Little Falls, MN. He is on the mend with the help of your prayers. Please continue healing prayers for Marcus, Kimetha and the rest of the family so that they return back home soon.
