Maintenance Tasks
Thanks to all who participated in the Saturday work day, May 22nd: Kupec family, John S., Marge H., Max B. It was a beautiful day. They sprayed for weeds & bugs, built a tool crib in the storage building, sided the front south side of the storage building, cleaned the hall and more! John & Katie R. decorated the church for Pentecost. On the next work day (to be announced) come & be part of the team.
Request for help
We need assistance helping our not-so-fortunate brothers and sisters in Christ. There has been more requests for food, help with payment of utility bills, etc. coming to our church. Please pray about donations of food, scrip to buy food, or money to help those in need. Take action as the Holy Spirit directs you.
Fund Raising
With graduation ceremonies upon us you can buy some scrip from the parish and give them as a gift to your graduate. There’s a wide selection of cards and certificates available so you’re sure to find something they can use. Of course – buy gas, grocery & pharmacy cards for yourself. We all use these retailers.
Thanks go to those who helped Thursday with baking: Al Z., Danny E., Richard M and John D. The bake day is not exclusively a men’s club – the women are invited too 😉  Kudos also goes to Glen G. and his niece, Anne for selling our baked goods at the Carmel and Binford markets on Saturday, May 22nd. We will need help Saturday mornings at the markets throughout the summer. John will be away to his niece’s graduation on June 6, so we need someone to run the Carmel market on that day. Please sign up. There’s another market called Stadium Village Market across from Shapiro’s on South Meridian. We plan to make a presence there too on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 – 7 PM starting on June 1st.

Pentecost Sunday
Next Sunday is the feast of Pentecost. The Saturday before Pentecost, this upcoming Saturday, is the 5th and last All Souls Saturday of the liturgical year. Please come prayer for your deceased family members.
Congratulations
We welcome Andy Walsh to the parish and the Byzantine Catholic faith. Andy is receiving the three mysteries of Baptism, Chrismation, and Holy Communion on Saturday, May 15th. May God grant your servant, Andrew Walsh, many happy & blessed years.
Healing Ministry
We received another testimonial this week. To paraphrase the email: “… the Holy Trinity gave us great news about (my wife). She will not have to undergo chemo … and we believe she is and will be cancer free. … May God Bless … your ministry and all who prayed for us during this journey!”

Maintenance Tasks
Thanks to Max B. who replaced the main entry door on St. Mary’s hall on Saturday and Joe K. who filled the school building’s window wells with the remaining dirt off the parking lot. What a great job!

Ascension Thursday
This Thursday’s feast day is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will have a vigil Divine Liturgy on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Divine Liturgy on Thursday at 9 a.m. With 2 opportunities to attend at our parish or participating at another parish on the feast day you should get to church; otherwise you’re heading into Satan’s kingdom instead of God’s kingdom. … Fr. Sid
Food Pantry
The supplies are very low. Please donate non-perishable food or hygiene items, money or scrip. Thanks.

Fund raising
Thank you to Cyndi H., Julia B., Rita O. who worked with John to bake rolls, pumpkin logs, and kifli on May 6th. Also thanks to Bill F. and any others that helped prepare the hall for baking last week. On Saturday, May 8th the weather was windy, overcast and cool. We sold $146 in baked goods at the 62nd St & Binford Blvd. Farmers Market. Thanks to Danny E. who helped at the market. Sign up today to help this upcoming Saturday. We need your help to make sure that we have marketers each Saturday during the summer at either the Binford location or the Carmel Farmers Market. Look for a sign-up sheet in St. Mary’s Hall.
Pick up some scrip (gift cards) today. There’s a very wide selection cards to choose from. A few suggestions: use them for Mother’s Day (Today!), birthdays, and graduations.
Maintenance Tasks
Thanks to Max B. who replaced the failed door lock on St. Mary’s hall on Thursday. He did it with the speed of Mercury on the same day we had an emergency liturgy for Tom Prkye and the bake day.  Pick out a few items on the posted lists on the hall, recruit your own helpers and assist us in whittling the list down.

Happy Feast Day St Athanasius
St. Athanasius’ feast day is today, May 2nd.  We will have a pitch-in brunch after liturgy to celebrate. Please stay and celebrate with us – regardless whether you brought something or not. This past Tuesday we commemorated our 30th year since the parish’s first liturgy. Happy Feast Day and Happy Anniversary!
Thank you
Hilda (lives on the south side of the Russell family – 2 houses to the right of the church) & her friends from the neighborhood donated their time and energy mowing the lawn around the church, hall, rectory, storage building and school. It was a multi-day process with the riding and push mowers and a weed whacker. Please take the time to personally thank them. Maybe you’d like to buy a gift card for them (see below.)

Fund raising
Pick up some scrip (gift cards) today. If you don’t see John D. with them, just ask. We have a very wide selection of gas, grocery, health & beauty, fast foods, restaurant, department and book store cards to choose from. If you don’t have the money with you today, make sure you reserve some to pick up within the next week. Mother’s Day, birthdays, graduations are just around the corner. We need food pantry supplies too.
Thursday, May 6th we need your help with baking our famous nut rolls & other treats. If you didn’t see the Parish Event email (sent on 4/28) or have never helped before, ask John for the details. Invite your friends to learn how to make our various flavored rolls, pumpkin logs, possibly kolachy, kifli or angel wings. We’re flexible to adjust to what people are interested in. The parish also needs your help selling the baked treats at the 1st market this Saturday at 62nd St & Binford. Soon we’ll need help each Saturday during the summer at either the Binford location or the Carmel Farmers Market (our 10th year, so we have a good customer base.)

30 years
St. Athanasius’ feast day is May 2nd.  We will have a pitch-in brunch after liturgy to celebrate our parish’s patron feast. And this week is the 30th year commemoration of the parish’s first Divine Liturgy on Tuesday, April 27th. On Tuesday the liturgy is at 9 a.m., or you can come earlier to the Office of the 1st Hour being celebrated at 7 a.m. Please remember your parish in you daily prayers, especially during this week. Thank God that we’ve been blessed with a parish established 3 decades ago that continues to be the Light of the East here in central Indiana. Praise Him that He allows us to come together to express our gratitude to Him in the beautiful St. John Chrysostom Divine Liturgy of the Eastern Rite each week. We thank God for our Bishop John Kudrick, Fr. Sid Sidor and the past bishops and pastor/administrators who’ve all played a part in our parish’s history. And thanks to all the founding families and those who’ve been parishioners, whether for a few decades or a few months. Continue to encourage others to seek out and explore the hidden gem of Catholic Christianity right here at St. Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church. Don’t limit yourself to Divine Liturgy on Sundays. Make an effort to attend other services and events that will help all of us deepen our spiritual faith, evangelize, and become a caring community for one another. God grant us many years, for Christ is Risen!
Thank you
A 2nd collection will be taken 1) for buying a new garbage disposal for the rectory, 2) assist purchasing items for the food pantry, and 3) to pay remainder on the church furnaces. Thank you for your generosity.

Fund raising
The farmers markets will be starting soon (Binford begins on May 8th.)  Plan now to help Thursday, May 6th for baking our famous nut rolls. The parish also needs your help selling on Saturdays during the summer.

Saint George, the Great Martyr feast day
St. George’s feast day, a simple holy day on our liturgical calendar, is April 23rd. We will have a vigil Divine Liturgy on Thurday, April 22nd at 5 p.m. and the feast day Divine Liturgy on the Friday, April 23rd at 11:45 a.m. In our iconography St. George is commonly depicted as a soldier riding a horse and slaying a dragon.
Healing Testimonials
“I praise and thank God, our Almighty Father for you through which your healing service and my dearest friend Natasha’s standing in proxy for me.  Today the additional x-rays showed no mass and I did not need the ultrasound.”   June B.
…“ I want to thank you and the parish family of St. Athanasius, and especially Fr. Sid, for making St. Athanasius an oasis in our journey, a special home for our family for six months that we were in Indy.  I also would like to thank Fr. Sid for anointing me and curing my arthritic thumb joint and anointing our son Justin whose heart is perfect now!”  Dr. Eric, D. O.
“To make a long story short, from that time to the present, my tumor growth has stopped as measured by the drop in my PSA – done quarterly.  (Also, as part of this miracle, my bone lesions have disappeared)…”    Bill P.  M.D.
“I sincerely wish to give praise and honor to God for my healing, but also to Fr. Sid who was the facilitator of God’s healing energy to be channeled to me through the Paraklis Service.”   Bruce  W.
The next healing service is May 12th. Mark the 2nd Wednesday of every month on your calendar. Jesus heals!

Saint George, the Great Martyr feast day coming up
St. George’s feast day is April 23rd. It’s a simple holy day on our liturgical calendar. Please put April 23rd aside for attending Divine Liturgy to celebrate the feast. St. George, the glorious Great Martyr and wonderworker, refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods, was tortured and beheaded at Nicomedia in Asia Minor.  He was martyred in the reign of Diocletian, about A.D. 296. In our iconography St. George is commonly depicted as a soldier riding a horse and slaying a dragon.
Maintenance Update
Joe Kupec, Al Zetsel & grandsons, Bradley & Alex delivered sand, reattached gutter & down spouts, repaired the wooden fence, moved fill dirt into window wells on the old school building and mowed the majority of the grass this week. Please check the bulletin board in St. Mary’s Hall to see the remaining projects. Be part of the team making the list dwindle. It’s another way you can joyously use your God-given talents back to our parish for the glory of God.
Knights of Columbus Brunch
The Knights of Columbus are hosting Sunday brunch next Sunday, April 18th, following the 10 AM Divine Liturgy, the Knights will be serving: pirohy, kielbasa, sauerkraut, eggs, hash browns, pancakes, OJ, milk, coffee and dessert. Bright Week
Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Christós voskrése! Vo-ístinu voskrése! May the risen Christ bestow peace, health and happiness in this joyous season to all men, women & children of the world; especially St. Athanasius parishioners, guests, friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Our renewed spirit, honed by our diligence during the Great Fast, will continue to strengthen us to spread the Good News of Christ’s victory over Satan. Let us go forth and proclaim to others the truth of the Catholic faith through both word and deed – it’s God’s directive. As Fr. Sid has stated, “We have a good God.” Sow plenty of positive, optimistic seed to all, every day, so that we can foster an upbeat and encouraging community in which we live. As we do for others, we do for ourselves. God has made it a win-win solution!
Food Pantry
Our ministry to our local neighbors has had a gratifying week with at least 8 families receiving assistance from our parish in the last few days. To meet the continuing need we are requesting non-perishable food and hygiene items (or money to purchase them) from you. During the Great Fast almsgiving is highlighted as a virtuous activity. Now that the Pascal season is started we need to continue donating to the poor. The St. Athanasius Church food pantry is one such outlet. Please be generous in this important ministry to those in need.
Easter Bake Goods
Thanks to those who helped with baking on Thursday, April 1 (no fooling!): Brenda, Al, Olga, Paul, Mary, Joe, Julia, Bill, Richard, Marge. You can still get baked goods (rolls, pascha bread and pumpkin logs) for your family, co-workers and/or friends. They are a special treat that is sure to please.

Easter Sunday Liturgy is 10 AM. Please spend extra time with our Lord during Holy Week. If you want the church open during the day when no services are scheduled please call the rectory.
Let’s say Thank You
Fabric Care Center has been donating their dry cleaning work on our altar cloths and all liturgical items. They are located at 5760 West Morris St. and can be reached at 317-241-1288. Call them to say thank you and better yet, show your appreciation by getting your dry cleaning done there. They pick-up & deliver in some areas so give them a call.
Easter Bake Goods
The Binford indoor market was held on Saturday, March 27, 2010. Sales were over $200. Thanks to those who helped bake (Cyndi Huff), wrap (Julia, Seth & Sage Brown and Marge Hays), & sell (Max Beaver and Marcus Loidolt). You can still get baked goods (rolls, pascha bread, pumpkin logs) for your Easter basket and celebration.  Buy them today or come Thursday to help with the last bake day before Easter. We start at 8:30 a.m. Anyone who wants pascha or rolls must let the rectory know by Tuesday, March 30th. If you have questions on how to make the traditional food items for your Easter basket give the rectory a call and we’ll try to point you in the right direction. Hint: Always start any activity with a sincere prayer. So the first step to making pascha bread, hdruka Easter cheese, etc. is asking for God’s divine assistance. He wants to help.

Announcements:
Holy Week
Clear your evening calendar for Holy Week.  (FYI: It’s not this week but the following week.) The liturgies Monday – Thursday are at 7 PM. Friday’s Vespers & Burial Service is at 7 PM. Saturday’s Resurrection Matins are at 5 PM. Easter Sunday Liturgy is 10 AM. Also use your special envelopes to help offset the cost of lilies that will be decorating the church during the Easter season.
Annunciation of the Theotokos
This solemn holyday is Thursday, March 25th. Have you read Luke 1:26-38?
This is not a day of fasting. Therefore do not fast from communal worship at St. Athanasius parish. See you at 6:30 AM office of the 1st hour, noon midday office, and 7 PM vespers with liturgy. Come to 1 or all three.
Workday
Thanks for all who attended the work day on Saturday, March 20. Special thanks go to the Kupec family, Russell family, Brown family, Brenda Linn, John Sosna, Richard Medwig, Max Beaver, and anyone else who attended. Joe, the hands-on supervisor, was almost at a loss of words due the great amount of work that was completed. See everything that is marked off the list. There’s more to do of course but the 14 of us made a nice dent in the cleaning/maintenance list. And we baked 7 pascha breads too. Teamwork in the name of God works. We thank Him for the weather and camaraderie.

Easter Market
The Binford indoor market is scheduled for the next 2 Saturdays from 9 AM until noon. Since the 2nd Saturday is Holy Saturday & the day before Easter we’re not planning to attend that one. If you can help this Saturday anytime from 8 AM (setup) until 12:15 (tear-down) please call the rectory.
