August Feast Days
The Transfiguration of Our Lord is commemorated on August 6th (Friday of this week). This is a solemn holy day and we will have a vigil Divine Liturgy on Thursday too. The Feast of the Holy Transfiguration is linked to the harvest of the first-fruits of the season. It is customary to bring grapes and other soft-fruits to church to have them blessed to express gratitude to God for all things. (You can bring garden vegetables too.) Why grapes? Grapes represent 1) transformation, 2) new life and 3) Holy Gifts:

  1. Grapes transform from buds to flowers into fruit, fruit into juice, and juice into wine. In the Divine Liturgy wine transforms mystically into the Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
  2. Grapes represent new life on old vines.
  3. Grapes also symbolize a good harvest as a gift from God. St. John Chrysostom wrote, “The farmer receives fruit from the earth not so much because of his labor and diligence, but because of goodness of God, Who grows this fruit, because neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase (1 Cor. 3:7).”

The Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated on August 15th. The traditional rule for the Dormition Fast is a strict abstinence from August 1 thru August 14, with the usual mitigation (wine & oil) for Saturdays and Sundays and the Feast of the Transfiguration. The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season. The observance of this fast is voluntary. On the Dormition feast day we bless flowers (because flowers were discovered in her tomb after her body was taken into heaven), herbs (used for medicinal purposes in the summer heat which was conducive to many infectious diseases), and plants.
The annual eparchial pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Mariapoch in Burton, Ohio starts with opening liturgy on Saturday, August 14 at noon. It concludes with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 15 at 3:30 p.m. For more details see http://www.mariapoch.org/pilgrimage2 or ask at the rectory.

Sunday Brunch – today
The monthly brunch served by the Knights of Columbus James J O’Brian Council 13850 is today. While others may be at the Brickyard 400 you can enjoy great company right here. Please stay and enjoy some of the very popular, but rarely found ethnic foods in Indianapolis: pirohi with sautéed onions, kielbasa & sauerkraut and other goodies like pancakes, eggs, hash browns, etc. There will be a 50-50 raffle so participate for the chance at winning some cash.
Your parish needs you
Set aside July 31st so you can attend the work day and a joyous meal this upcoming Saturday. There is plenty to do both inside the various buildings as well landscaping work outdoors. (I’m confident that the weather will be better than this past week’s high humidity days in mid-90s.) Joe’s list of items is on the bulletin board. Review it today. Joe states, “We plan to have a pitch in cookout at the end of the day to celebrate all of our accomplishments.” So plan to come and bring something refreshing to the meal. Thanks for sharing your time and talent in addition to your tithe here at the loving parish of St. Athanasius.
Fund Raising
The Scrip cards that were sitting on the delivery truck last weekend have come in. Check with John to see which cards we have available.

Blessing of Vehicles
A long standing tradition in the Eastern Church is a special blessing for modes of transportation in commemoration of St. Elias’ feast day on July 20th. Recall that St. Elias or Elijah ascended into heaven on a fiery chariot. He is the Patron of drivers and the protector of the means of transportation. Take advantage of this extra protection (you need car insurance in Indiana and you really could use Divine protection even more!)  Keep in mind that the blessing of 1st fruits and flowers fall on feast days in August so keep gardening.

Welcoming Committee
Our parish could benefit from a few parishioners who greet people at the door to assist them with the liturgy & hymn books. Some visitors could use some direction during the liturgy to follow along with our beautiful service so you should offer to sit with them. Please consider being a helping hand to our visitors. We will get a schedule posted in St. Mary’s Hall. Thank you.
Knights of Columbus
The monthly brunch served by the James J O’Brian Council 13850 is next Sunday. Invite your friends, neighbors and co-workers. There will be a 50-50 raffle so participate for the chance at winning some cash.
Fund Raising
Scrip cards were ordered last week. Check with John to see which cards we have available.

Independence Day
Plan to attend 9 AM Divine Liturgy on Monday to commemorate the United States of America’s independence. Bring your friends. We will enjoy some goodies in St Mary’s Hall following liturgy. We’ll see you there.
Fund Raising
Thank you to Al Zetsel and another pair of his grandsons, Benjamin and Charley, for helping Marcus L. and John D. in making the rolls on Thursday. Later Cyndi H. filled pumpkin logs, cleaned & wrapped rolls.  Praise God for the productive day and those who shared their time with us. We baked 43 rolls, 12 pumpkin logs, 7 dozen biscotti and 9 dozen kolachy. For the 4th of July we made red-white-blue rolls and kolachy. On Saturday, July 3rd, Paul Suvak & John D. brought in $521 in bake sales at the Carmel Farmers Market.  Thank you to Anne, Glen G.’s niece, for being our salesperson at Binford Farmers Market selling $146. This past Tuesday John D. sold $102 at the Stadium Village Farmer’s Market. Glen G. sold $52 in rolls at the City Market on Wednesday. That totals $821, a record, in weekly sales. Thank God for bestowing His great abundance upon us.
If anyone wants to assist at the markets or baking or kitchen set-up / cleaning please call the rectory or talk to John D. after the liturgy.  Thanks for your spiritual help (prayers) and your sharing your time with our parish.

Announcements
Saints Peter and Paul
A holy day of obligation is this Tuesday. We will have a vigil Divine Liturgy on Monday and Divine Liturgy on the morning of the feast. See the schedule for liturgical times. The Apostles Fast concludes on Monday evening. Although optional, during the day on Monday you should try to observe a day of strict fasting.

Independence Day
Next weekend is the national holiday of the United States of America’s independence. If you have visitors please bring them to St. Athanasius parish for Divine Liturgy on Saturday, July 3rd or Sunday, July 4th. In addition to your family picnics & barbeques include glorifying God in your plans and bring your friends.
Fund Raising
Thank you to Al Zetsel and his grandsons, Bradley and Alex for performing a large amount of the work in preparing dough through assembling the rolls on Thursday. John Russell helped with some of the prep work too. Bill Ferguson and Richard Medwig also helped John D. wrap the 86 rolls. Praise God that it was a productive day. On Saturday, June 26, Danny Enciso & Paul Suvak brought in $464 in bake sales at the Carmel Farmers Market and John D. collected $173 in sales at the Binford Farmers Market. Thank you for your prayers! By the way we’re not trying to be exclusively a men’s operation. Women are invited too.
With market sales doing so well we need your assistance in making and wrapping the products to sell. Currently we need to produce poppy seed (we made 16 and have 2 left) & apricot rolls (we made 5 and there is none remaining), kolachy and pumpkin logs. We’ve got requests but no inventory. Please talk to John so we can determine the best date for the next bake day. Prior to Saturday is what we need.

It’s time to bake more rolls for the markets. Despite the early morning rain and humid day on Saturday we sold out of nut and poppy seed rolls. (We still have a few nut rolls that were left in the freezer and some fruit flavors for Tuesday’s market.) Come be part of the group on Thursday while we make our famous rolls. Please call John at the rectory to tell him what part of the day you can help. God bless those who share their talent with the parish by helping bake, wrap and sell the baked goods.

Announcements
June Healing Service
Fr. Sid will be at a priest conference on the 2nd Wednesday which is the regularly scheduled day for the healing service. For the month of June the healing service is moved to the 3rd Wednesday, June 16th. Please tell everyone you know about the change. A web page with testimonials will be put on our website next week. If you have a testimonial to add to the growing stack we want to hear about it.
Upcoming Events
On Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 the Eparchial family will gather for the 1st Midwest Region Family Otpust. It is being held at St. Michael’s Church in Merrillville, IN – about 2.5 hours northwest of Indy. There will be plenty of opportunities for fellowship, prayer, faith formation, and entertainment, and every person will find something that will inspire. For a preview of the festivities we encourage you to talk to John Danovich and also look at the flyer posted in St. Mary’s Hall or follow this link http://parma.org/family_otpust__cleveland.htm. Parish displays are available on Saturday afternoon. If you’re interested in participating in a parish display we need to know by June 7th.
Fund Raising
A group is baking in St. Mary’s Hall on Thursday, June 3rd – both parishioners and friends of the parish alike. If you have a day job we still need your help at the end of the day to assist in wrapping the bake goods (and help eat some samples.) Come join us. All are welcome.
June and graduations go together. Please buy some scrip (gift cards or certificates) from the parish and give them as a gift to your graduate. A gift card gives your family member or friend great flexibility in purchasing something they really want; and you don’t have to shop for it. Of course – buy gas, grocery & pharmacy cards for yourself. We’ll be ordering more scrip cards soon so let us know where you shop.
Saints Peter & Paul (Apostles) Fast
The Apostles Fast begins Sunday evening, May 30, and concluding on the evening of Monday, June 28. The Typikon prescribes strict abstinence on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with a mitigated abstinence (Wine and Oil) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season (Canon 880). This fast may be observed voluntarily.
