St. Nicholas Brunch

The feast day for St. Nicholas of Myra is tomorrow, December 6th. Come to St. Mary’s Hall following the Divine Liturgy and share a meal with us today, December 5th. There’s a rumor that St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra, will be visiting us!
The Divine Liturgy for the feast will be celebrated on Monday at 5:30 PM.

Christmas Gifts – Here
Books, icons, Christmas cards, scrip, bake goods are all available so you don’t have to worry about all those lines at the mall. Do your Christmas shopping at your parish and invite others to do so too. Note: the parish could use 2 more wreaths to decorate the side pillars of the church, if you’d like to donate one or two.

Parish Prayer & Service Day
Thanks to those who attended St. Phillips Fast Day of Service and Recollection on Saturday, December 4th: Richard M, Scott A, Bill F, Mike & Tanua P, Max B, Joe, Mary, Nicholas & Thomas K, and John D. The day started with prayer & lighting of candles. Breakfast & lunch were served. Eight and ½ major items were marked off the to-do list – check the bulletin board in St. Mary’s Hall for the list. God grant your servants many blessed and happy years!
St. Alphonsus Liguori Visit
If you recall, the Confirmation class of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church in Zionsville attended our parish for Divine Liturgy last year at this time. Fr. Sid and Henry Peresie will be presenting “The Eastern Catholic Church” to them at their parish this Sunday evening on December 5th. Next Sunday, December 12th, the new Confirmation class will be attending Divine Liturgy here at St. Athanasius. We will be providing them a luncheon so they have time to socialize with our parishioners and ask questions. The parish will provide pizza. If you’d like to bring other snacks feel free to do so.

St. Nicholas Brunch

St. Nicholas visiting the parish in 2008
The feast day for St. Nicholas of Myra is December 6. Our parish will be remembering this special day with a pitch-in brunch on Sunday, December 5. So bring your favorite covered dish, your family and friends to the celebration in St. Mary’s Hall following the Divine Liturgy next Sunday. Come with an appetite!

Holy Father’s comments misrepresented by media
Reports by the media claiming that comments made by Pope Benedict XVI in his newly released book represent a “seismic shift in the Vatican’s position on birth control” are false and misreported. An accurate presentation of what the Pope actually said can be obtained by visiting www.zenit.org or by actually reading the Holy Father’s new book.
Banns of Marriage
It is the intention of Marcus Jon Loidolt son of Melvin & Catherine Loidolt to take in marriage Kimetha Gwen Steele, widow and daughter of Eugene & Dorothy Pottgieser in marriage on the 30th day of April 2011, here at St. Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church.
Parish Work Day
December 4 – this Saturday – next parish work day – be there. It is being referred to as the St. Phillips Fast Day of Service and Recollection sponsored by the St. Athanasius Maintenance Department. Prior to work the day will start in the church with candle lighting for everyone’s intentions, festal readings, tropars, and carols. Continental breakfast served at 8 am.  Ethnic lunch served at noon. Look at the project list in St. Mary’s Hall or here.

Announcements
St. Phillip’s Fast
According to the forty day tradition, the Phillips’ Fast in preparation for Christmas begins on this Monday.  During this fast it was the custom to observe a strict abstinence on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and a lesser abstinence (mitigation for wine and oil) on Tuesday and Thursday.  The fast is observed more strictly from December 10 (in some traditions) or from December 20 (in other traditions), with daily strict abstinence, and a mitigated abstinence (wine and oil) on Saturday and Sunday.  The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season (Canon 880, § 2).  This fast may be observed voluntarily, partially or in its entirety. If you have any questions please ask Father Sid.

Parish Needs
The next parish work day is scheduled for Saturday, December 4.

Thank you for those who’ve donated towards a new communion set: chalice, diskos, star, etc. and white vestments. We still have a way to go so please be generous during this St. Phillip’s fasting period.

Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving brunch
The menu will reflect the holiday theme at the November KofC brunch on Sunday, November, 21. So invite your friends to Divine Liturgy and a dinner of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, etc.

Charity Needs
Fr. Sidor is requesting to purchase a new set of white vestments and a chalice & paten. If you would like to donate them or a portion of the money to help purchase them see Father.
As the weather has turned colder the need of our brothers & sisters in Christ who are less fortunate is increasing. More people are coming to the church in search of food, gasoline cards or bus tickets (to get to work), etc. Thank you for those who’ve donated items or money to buy non-perishable foods and personal hygiene items to the food pantry. Please read Matthew 25:35 and pray about this. In addition to canned meat products (ravioli, chili, etc.), canned vegetables, pasta, pasta sauce, soup, etc. people also are in need of bath, dish & laundry soap, paper towels, toilet paper, gloves, hats, scarves, socks, gasoline cards. Consider buying scrip cards at St. Athanasius parish. You’ll be helping us too.
Fund Raising
Thank you to the volunteers who help at our various fund raising activities. The Binford market continues through the end of October and Carmel & Stadium Village markets have reached the end of their season.  So if you want to experience the remaining farmer’s market talk to John.
Sermon Homework

Fr. Sidor has started a series of sermons on Lucifer and demons. He suggests you read Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28. Next week’s sermon will be “Who is the Devil?”
