Bright Week

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Christós voskrése! Vo-ístinu voskrése!
May the risen Christ bestow peace, health and happiness in this joyous season to all men, women & children of the world; especially St. Athanasius parishioners, guests, friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Our renewed spirit, honed by our diligence during the Great Fast, will continue to strengthen us to spread the Good News of Christ’s victory over Satan. Let us go forth and proclaim to others the truth of the Catholic faith through both word and deed – it’s God’s directive. As Fr. Sid has stated, “We have a good God.”
During Bright Week, and then the remainder of the 40-day Paschal season, let’s proclaim “The tomb is empty. Christ is Risen!” Sow this light-filled, life-giving and optimistic “seed” to all, every day, so that we can foster an upbeat and encouraging community in which we live. As we do for others, we do for ourselves. God has made it a win-win solution!
You’re invited!
Everyone in the parish is invited to join us in the celebration of the wedding of Marcus Jon Loidolt to Kimetha Gwen Steele on Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 2 PM here at our parish. There is a pitch-in reception to follow in St. Mary’s Hall. In lieu of presents please bring a covered dish.
John 2:1-5 – The Wedding at Cana
2:1 On the Third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, What does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Confessions after a service are possible too. The liturgies are Monday – Thursday are at 6 PM. Friday’s Reading of the Passion Gospels are at noon. Friday’s Vespers & Burial Service is at 7 PM. Saturday’s Resurrection Matins are at 5 PM. Easter Sunday Liturgy is 10 AM. Please spend extra time with our Lord during Holy Week. You’re invited!
As part of the Eparchy of Parma’s year-long marriage initiative, Bishop John and the docudrama team cordially invite you to attend a live, interactive marriage presentation. Come to St. Michael church, 557 W. 57th Ave., Merrillville, IN, on Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. and witness the matrimonial journey of Andrew and Kathryn. “’Till Death Unites Us Forever” is a live, interactive presentation for people of all ages. There will be something for everyone in this presentation, from happily married couples who practice their faith to those considering marriage in the near or even far future. The Byzantine Ritual of Marriage itself – its deep, encompassing wisdom and spiritual richness – will serve as the reservoir our of which the presentation will seek to address the questions, yearning, joys, doubts, hopes, hurts and disappointments that lie in the hearts of people today. The presentation affirms that sacramental marriage is truly an honorable and good thing, something worth the commitment and effort.
After the presentation, greet the actors and enjoy refreshments at the reception in the parish hall.

The Great Fast
Clear your evening calendar for Holy Week, April 18-23.  The liturgies Monday – Thursday and Good Friday’s Vespers & Burial Service will be at 7. Reading of the Passion Gospels will be at noon on Good Friday. Saturday’s Resurrection Matins are at 5 PM. Easter Sunday Liturgy is 10 AM.
The Mystery of Reconciliation (Confession) is important to repair your relationship with God. Repentance is acknowledging that you can do better, resolving not to repeat the offense, and reversing the harmful effects of the wrong where possible. Absolution, conferred by the priest wearing his stole, will wipe the slate clean and shine up your tarnished soul. Fr. Sid makes himself available on any day, when he can, if you call ahead for an appointment.

Another shipment of good books came in this week. Many are below list price. Take a look and pick out a few to buy. Then take time during the week to immerse yourself in a good spiritual book.

Food Pantry
Items for the food pantry are very low. Please donate as a means of almsgiving to the poor. If you don’t know what to bring then call the rectory or donate money so we can use scrip cards to buy the food. Thank you for your generosity.
Upcoming Events

April 13 & 27 – Ancient Healing Service

The Great Fast
“It is necessary most of all for one who is fasting to curb anger, to accustom oneself to meekness and condescension, to have a contrite heart, to repulse impure thoughts and desires, to examine the conscience, to put one’s mind to the test and to verify what good has been done by us in this or any other week, and which deficiency we have corrected in our self in the present week.
This is true fasting.”  St. John Chrysostom

Christian Initiation
Ray Hamilton, Allyson and Alex Carmichael will be receiving the 3 mysteries (sacraments) of Baptism, Chrismation & Holy Eucharist today. Our parish welcomes the newly “Sealed in the Holy Spirit” brothers and sister of God. Come celebrate with their families after Divine Liturgy. There will be a feast in St. Mary’s Hall.

The Great Fast
Here are suggestions for what you should be doing during the Lenten season:
1) Pray – talk to God. He will listen and respond. Say prayers from your heart as well as a prayer book.
2) Go to Church – not only on Sundays but to Presanctified Liturgies and All Souls Saturday Liturgies
3) Repentance – repair your relationship with God. Accept that you can do better then strive to do so.
4) Fast – discipline yourself spiritually in what you do as well as what or how much you eat
5) Read – the Bible and other spiritual books. We have a wealth of good books for you to purchase.
6) Alms – give to those in need. Ask yourself if you’re giving of your time, talent and treasure to those in our community for the glory of God.
To discuss these points in more detail please talk to Father Sid.
Parish Council Meeting
The parish council and other interested parishioners will be meeting on Wednesday, March 16. We’ll receive details of people’s research for current and future projects.  You’re invited to attend and bring your ideas.

The Great Fast and Cheesefare
Today is the last day before the start of the Great Fast. During the Great Fast we’re encouraged to abstain from certain foods like meat and dairy.  On Cheesefare Sunday we are saying goodbye to dairy. The Great Fast period is a preparation for the greatest feast of the year – Pascha. The forty days symbolize the forty years the Israelites wandered in the desert. The Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts will be celebrated on Wednesday and Fridays at our parish. We will continue to have the Ancient Healing Service on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays during the Great Fast. On those weeks the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts will be celebrated on Monday instead of Wednesday. We’re the only nearby Catholic Church that celebrates this ancient and beautiful Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts for 6 weeks in a row. It’s up to you to choose to take advantage of these services. Encourage others to immerse themselves in this special gift of the Eastern Catholic Church.
Listen to the 2011 Lenten Pastorial Letter “A Passion for Christ” from Most Reverend John M Kudrick, our Bishop of Eparchy of Parma.  Here’s an article on fasting.
Parish Council Meeting
The parish council and other interested parishioners attended last Wednesday evening’s meeting. The 17 people who attended were briefed on numerous projects. Seven people are performing follow-ups for the next meeting on Wednesday, March 16. You’re invited to attend and bring your ideas.

Chrismation
Mike and Tauna Piland are receiving the sacraments of Chrismation & Holy Eucharist today. God grant your servants peace, health and happiness for many happy years. Congratulations!
Thank you
We are grateful to all those who volunteer their time working at the church or at other locations on behalf of the church. For example: maintenance, planning and fund raising activities such as baking and selling & evangelizing at the markets. Thank you to those the have donated to the food pantry and church socials.

Favorites like pancakes, eggs, hash browns, ham and Eastern European foods such as pirohi (potato-cheese, sauerkraut-onion, and lekvar), kielbasi and sauerkraut are being prepared for you. The KofC requests that you help offset the cost of the meal with a free will offering.
Next Sunday is the last day before the start of the Great Fast. Our tradition is to have everyone bring in a meatless dish to share with others as a remembrance of the Lenten season. During the Great Fast we may refrain from certain foods like meat and dairy so on Cheesefare Sunday we are saying goodbye to dairy. Please let the rectory know what you plan to bring. Thank you!
Parish Council Meeting
The parish council and any other interested parishioners will be meeting Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM.

Baking for Spring

Cyndi supervises while Bill, Al & Harry assemble nut rolls
It’s time to start building an inventory of baked goods in anticipation of sales for Easter. Please volunteer to help the parish make our famous nut & poppy seed rolls, pumpkin logs and other baked goods. A few hours is helpful so don’t fret about using up your entire Saturday. If you don’t know how to make them then this is the opportunity to learn – and you don’t have to pay to go to culinary school. Volunteer bakers also get a discount for helping out.
Food Pantry
We need more donated items for the food pantry. If you don’t know what to bring then call the rectory or donate money so we can use scrip cards to buy the food. Thank you kindly for your generosity.

Announcements
Healing Service
There were good praise reports from our last service on February 9. Namely, Forest M. was to have open heart surgery. His doctor was able to use a stent instead. Cathy B. was expected to die within the day from cancer but she stabilized enough for her extended family from Indiana to visit her in Newfoundland Canada for a few days. She passed away a week later.
The next healing service is this Wednesday, February 23rd. Invite your friends and family to come pray with us. Let Fr. Sid’s teaching inspire you and allow God’s healing power to touch and change your life.
All Souls Saturday
Next Saturday, February 26th, will be the first All Souls Saturday. The 9 AM Divine Liturgy is followed by a Panachida, in which the faithful departed of the parish families are remembered. Thanks to those who’ve provided a list family members to be mentioned by name. There are forms in the back of the church. (You don’t have to submit a new form if nothing has changed since last year.) Since we are remembering the deceased individuals of your family by name Fr. highly recommends that everyone make a special effort to attend these liturgies so that you can pray with the entire parish for your departed loved ones.

Work Day at St. A.
The St Athanasius Maintenance Department (SAMD) had a very successful work day on Saturday. We completed 8 items (including a couple new ones) with 2 from the list being moved to next Saturday. Thanks to the following: Kupec family (Joe, Mary, Nicholas, Thomas), Max B., Richard M., Mike P., Kevin Z., Susan P., Arbuckle (Scott, Matthew, Will), Jim Y., and John D.  God grant our volunteer workers and food providers peace, health and abundant years. Stay after the upcoming All Souls Saturday and help us knock out a few more projects. Come and enjoy the camaraderie and see the result of your efforts.
Knights of Columbus Brunch
Next Sunday, February 27, will be Sunday of Meat Fare. It will also be the monthly brunch cooked for you and your guests. Notify others so we’ll have a good crowd at Divine Liturgy and then the brunch.
