Appeals

Thank you for those who donated the sum of $307.02 to the Catholic Home Missions!  We have one more 2nd collection today. Also thank you to those who have supported the 2010/2011 Stewardship Appeal. We reached our parish goal of $1,400.
Fund Raising
There are many good books that are available for purchase here at the church. The popular angel books are back in stock with many new titles from the same author. Scrip cards are always available here at the church. Before going to the grocery, gas station, department store or pharmacy, check with us to get one or more scrip cards. The parish buys these gift cards at a discount. You purchase them from us at the face value and the church makes some money on the purchases you make every week. Thanks to those who have purchased our baked goods. We continue to make them for the farmers markets, the parishioners and friends.
Future Dates
The next work day is scheduled for June 25th. Set that date aside to come help with various projects. Some projects have been sent by e-mail and you can check the bulletin board inside St. Mary’s Hall for the list.
We also need people to run the markets on Saturday, June 11th. Two people who routinely help will be out of town so we could use your help. Call the rectory and John will give you the details.

Ascension Thursday
This holy day of obligation commemorates when, on the fortieth day after His Resurrection, Jesus led His disciples to the Mount of Olives, and after blessing them and proclaiming the great commission, He ascended into heaven. Our parish schedule includes a vigil Divine Liturgy on Wednesday, June 1, at 5:30 p.m. and Divine Liturgy on Thursday, June 2, at 11:30 a.m. With 2 opportunities to attend at our parish, or participating at another parish on the feast day, you should get to church; otherwise you’re heading into Satan’s kingdom instead of God’s kingdom. … Fr. Sid.

Thank you to those who have supported the 2010/2011 Stewardship Appeal that ends in June. We have collected $1,124 with $276 to go. We’re at 80%. Help us to reach our parish goal of $1,400.

Tip of the Hat
Thanks to our volunteers last week: Knights of Columbus members, Stanton family, & other helpful hands who cleared the hall last Sunday following the KofC brunch. Special kudos to Bill F who stripped, sealed and waxed the hall floor from Monday through Wednesday. Joe K moved the furniture back into St. Mary’s hall on Thursday. Al Z, Judy E, and John D assembled, baked, wrapped, and labeled prosphora, kolachy, biscotti, rolls and pizzelles on Wednesday and Thursday. Danny E was at the Binford market while John D and Paul S were at the Carmel Farmers Market evangelizing and selling baked goods on Saturday, May 28. By adding the baked goods sold at the church, the parish brought in $539.50 in sales and made new contacts due to our volunteers’ efforts. If you can help at Wednesday’s bake day please let the rectory know. We also need people to run the markets on Saturday, June 11th. Check your schedule and plan to help on that day.

The Eparchy of Parma has been helped in the past by grants from Catholic Home Missions! For all who can and are able to contribute, the gifts (monetary & prayers) are truly appreciated by our brothers and sisters in Christ. We were asked by Bishop John Kudrick to take a special collection for CHM during all May Liturgies. We missed last week so this will be our first week to take this 2nd collection. The appeal primarily supports those churches unable to offer their people the basic pastoral ministries of word, worship and service without outside help. Happy Mother’s Day to all women of the parish. You truly deserve glorious accolades for all you do. Happy birthday to Fr. Sid! May they all have a wonderful day receiving God’s blessings and graces.
Blaine Ave Clean-Up
Both parishioners and friends worked diligently on Saturday May 7. The energetic volunteers cleaned sidewalks and street curbs, replaced the front door on the rectory, power-washed some brick on the church and siding on the rectory, removed weeds, dug up spring bulbs & plants, spread mulch, cut down bushes and trees, hauled away the majority of the brush pile, transplanted “volunteer” pumpkin plants from the compost pile, placed baking racks back into the hall, swept & mopped the hall floor. The Greek Islands Restaurant on 906 South Meridian Street provided breakfast foods as well as many volunteers. Lunch was a combination of hot dogs & salads from the City of Indianapolis, chili & oriental salad by volunteers and even delicious items from last week’s Loidolt wedding reception. The parish sends a very large thank you to all the volunteers and planers of this successful event.

Bright Week

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Christós voskrése! Vo-ístinu voskrése!
May the risen Christ bestow peace, health and happiness in this joyous season to all men, women & children of the world; especially St. Athanasius parishioners, guests, friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Our renewed spirit, honed by our diligence during the Great Fast, will continue to strengthen us to spread the Good News of Christ’s victory over Satan. Let us go forth and proclaim to others the truth of the Catholic faith through both word and deed – it’s God’s directive. As Fr. Sid has stated, “We have a good God.”
During Bright Week, and then the remainder of the 40-day Paschal season, let’s proclaim “The tomb is empty. Christ is Risen!” Sow this light-filled, life-giving and optimistic “seed” to all, every day, so that we can foster an upbeat and encouraging community in which we live. As we do for others, we do for ourselves. God has made it a win-win solution!
You’re invited!
Everyone in the parish is invited to join us in the celebration of the wedding of Marcus Jon Loidolt to Kimetha Gwen Steele on Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 2 PM here at our parish. There is a pitch-in reception to follow in St. Mary’s Hall. In lieu of presents please bring a covered dish.
John 2:1-5 – The Wedding at Cana
2:1 On the Third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, What does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

You’re invited!
As part of the Eparchy of Parma’s year-long marriage initiative, Bishop John and the docudrama team cordially invite you to attend a live, interactive marriage presentation. Come to St. Michael church, 557 W. 57th Ave., Merrillville, IN (about 2.5 hours north of St. Athanasius parish), on Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. and witness the matrimonial journey of Andrew and Kathryn. “’Till Death Unites Us Forever” is a live, interactive presentation for people of all ages. There will be something for everyone in this presentation, from happily married couples who practice their faith to those considering marriage in the near or even far future. The Byzantine Ritual of Marriage itself – its deep, encompassing wisdom and spiritual richness – will serve as the reservoir our of which the presentation will seek to address the questions, yearning, joys, doubts, hopes, hurts and disappointments that lie in the hearts of people today. The presentation affirms that sacramental marriage is truly an honorable and good thing, something worth the commitment and effort.
After the presentation, greet the actors and enjoy refreshments at the reception in the parish hall.

The Great Fast
Clear your evening calendar for Holy Week, April 18-23.  The liturgies Monday – Thursday and Good Friday’s Vespers & Burial Service will be at 7. Reading of the Passion Gospels will be at noon on Good Friday. Saturday’s Resurrection Matins are at 5 PM. Easter Sunday Liturgy is 10 AM.
The Mystery of Reconciliation (Confession) is important to repair your relationship with God. Repentance is acknowledging that you can do better, resolving not to repeat the offense, and reversing the harmful effects of the wrong where possible. Absolution, conferred by the priest wearing his stole, will wipe the slate clean and shine up your tarnished soul. Fr. Sid makes himself available on any day, when he can, if you call ahead for an appointment.

Another shipment of good books came in this week. Many are below list price. Take a look and pick out a few to buy. Then take time during the week to immerse yourself in a good spiritual book.

Food Pantry
Items for the food pantry are very low. Please donate as a means of almsgiving to the poor. If you don’t know what to bring then call the rectory or donate money so we can use scrip cards to buy the food. Thank you for your generosity.
