Announcements
Healing Service
The 2nd healing service this month will be offered this Wednesday, August 25. Plan to come pray and take advantage of this ancient service, which is part of our rich heritage. Come with faith in God’s word that he has taken your sickness (spiritual or bodily) to the cross. See Isaiah 53:5, Matthew 8:17, and 1 Peter 2:24.
2nd Collection
Bishop John Kudrick has requested that we have a collection for those who’ve been afflicted by the natural disaster in Pakistan. Thank you for your generosity.

Knights of Columbus Brunch
The monthly brunch prepared by the James J O’Brian council 13850 is scheduled for August 29th. Invite your friends and introduce them to the Byzantine Ruthenian Rite of the Eastern Catholic Church starting with the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom at 10 AM followed by the brunch. Let’s show them our prayerful worship of the Trinity and our hospitality with some of the traditional foods of pirohi and kielbasi with sauerkraut. American foods will be served too.
Food Pantry
If you have non-perishable items at home that have future expiration dates and have been taking up shelf space please bring them to church to help build up our food pantry. That way you’re freeing up valuable space in your cabinets and the parish food pantry is being stocked for the colder weather when the need is highest. In addition to canned meat products (ravioli, chili, etc.), canned vegetables, pasta, pasta sauce, soup, etc. people also are in need of bath, dish & laundry soap, paper towels, toilet paper, gloves, hats, scarves, socks. In the next few weeks we’ll have a list posted in the hall of items were looking for.

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

On Thursday, June 24th, we are starting the day with Divine Liturgy celebrating the Birth of St. John the Baptist at 6:30 a.m. Come and honor God as we commemorate this solemn Holy Day.
Following the liturgy St. Mary’s Hall will be active with people baking our famous nut & poppy seed rolls. If you’ve always wanted to know how to make potica this is your chance. We’re  willing to show you how it’s done if you’re willing to help with the dough preparation, assembly of the rolls, baking, wrapping and/or labeling. Come spend a few hours between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.  Lunch is likely to be pizza, salad (from John’s garden) & garlic scape pesto.  See you there.

SATURDAY
Liturgy will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday at St. Athanasius Church. Come help celebrate Father Sidney Sidor’s ordination anniversary following the liturgy. Bishop John Kudrick ordained Fr. Sid on 6/19/2004 in Parma, Ohio. God grant your servant, Reverend Father Sidney Sidor, peace, health and happiness for many blessed years. Mnohaja l’ita, blahaja l’ita, mnohaja, blahaja l’ita.

SUNDAY

The Knights of Columbus James J O’Brian Council 13850 is having a celebration brunch on Sunday for both Fr. Sid and all fathers on Father’s Day. So come and help support the parish’s Knights of Columbus and celebrate a portion of your Father’s Day at St. Athanasius. Please invite your family & friends to the liturgy and brunch too. All are invited. Fathers and their families will enjoy the menu of pirohy, kielbasa w/sauerkraut, pancakes, eggs, hash browns, coffee, milk, OJ and dessert.

We now sell them at the church, on the internet, at 4 Farmer’s Markets: Binford, Carmel, City Market, and Stadium Village.

Archbishop Basil Schott Died

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

It is with sadness that St. Athanasius Church & its parishioners learned of the death of their Metropolitan Basil Schott  on Thursday, June 10.  He was our shepherd of the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh after moving up from being our Bishop of the Eparchy of Parma in 2002.  His service to the Ruthenian  Catholic church will be remembered for years to come.  His affable personality will be sorely missed. He was a great example as a man of Christ.
A Funeral Divine Liturgy will be held in at St. John Cathedral, Munhall, PA at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 18. Interment: Mt. St. Macrina, Uniontown, PA.  See his obituary for other details.
MEMORIAL
In addition to requesting that the Divine Liturgy be offered for his intention at our parish, you may donate to a special memorial to Metropolitan Basil. The upcoming Eparchial Exhibit for the Strengthening of Marriage will be dedicated to his memory. Please send memorial donations to the Eparchy of Parma, 1900 Carlton Rd., Parma, OH 44134. The Eparchy will acknowledge the gifts; the Schott family and the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh will be informed of them, as well.

1st Stadium Village Farmers Market – June 1, 2010

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

We participated in the very first Stadium Village Farmers Market. God provided gorgeous sunny weather for the opening day. Both Danny Enciso and John Danovich were there to sell the parish’s famous nut rolls, pumpkin logs, garlic scapes, lettuce & herbs. Of course we fielded questions about the Eastern part of the Catholic Church. We passed out fliers describing the parish and where we’re located.
This market is scheduled for each Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to attract the south side downtown commuters. Come by and visit on Tuesday afternoons.
See other pictures, including our pumpkin log serving and half a lekvar roll, at AroundIndy.com site.

Baking on Thursday, May 20, 2010

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

On May 6th the bakers (Cyndi, Julia, Rita & John) made our famous nut rolls, kifli (nut butter horns) and pumpkin logs.  We’re making another batch of rolls and kolachy this Thursday. If you can help, even for a couple of hours, we can use your helping hands. If you can’t physically come then pray for those that do come. Pray that we have a great time socializing, working safely and being productive so no one has to stay too long. Realize that God blesses those parishioners & friends who sacrifice some of their busy week’s schedule to help on bake & market days. This is our primary fund raising activity. It also is a unique evangelistic tool to educate the public on some of the special things that the Eastern Catholic Church brings to entire Catholic Church.
Thursday’s list of activities include: making fillings, making dough, weighing dough, assembling / egg washing / baking / cutting / wrapping / labeling the rolls. You see, we can use you for a few hours either early, mid-day, or late afternoon/evening. If you know someone who wants to learn how to make potica (our famous rolls) invite them to join us this Thursday, May 20th from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.
On Saturday the Carmel Farmers Market begins. Because this Saturday is also the 5th and final All Souls Saturday of the liturgical year the parish is having a Divine Liturgy and Panachida starting at 9 a.m. John, who usually brings the baked goods and sells them at the Carmel market, won’t be able to go to the market this week. He will be helping cantor and serve at the Divine Liturgy. If you can’t make it to the Liturgy but can help at the market, especially this Saturday, please email or call the rectory.  Thanks!
