Confession
On the inside of the bulletin you can see that Father Sid is available to hear confessions 1 hour prior to liturgy and immediately following the liturgy. This week he will be even more available. Father is encouraging everyone to make a good confession during the Great Fast. Call for an appointment.
2011-2012 Stewardship Appeal
Have you submitted your pledge or payment for Bishop John’s annual appeal? Our parish goal is $1,400. Thus far we have pledges totaling $968 and $823 collected. Can we reach our pledged goal before the Great Fast ends this week? It will be a good gesture to Bishop John that as many families as possible donate even a small amount in gratefulness for providing the new icon screen to our parish.
Second Collection
To help defray the cost of various building work projects we are taking 2nd collections. Thanks for your generosity.
Did You Know?
Over the last 30 days the parish website has been visited by people from 15 different countries. In the last week people from 8 countries visited the website. What are they looking at? The Welcome page, Easter Baskets, Baked Goods, Byzantine Worship, etc. The top 3 pages have all been updated in the last week.
Pysanky Class
After our pitch-in brunch following Divine Liturgy we had 10 people making pysanky (Easter eggs.) Although the kistkas weren’t available (couldn’t find the container with some of the pysanky supplies) we made our decorations with small nail heads in the eraser of pencils. This picture shows a sampling of the eggs completed. Many other pysanky had already gone home with their creators before the camera came out. Thanks to all who participated.
The supplies will continue to be available in St. Mary’s Hall through Wednesday so come on by to create your own masterpiece.
Remember to plan on volunteering to bake pascha bread, potica rolls, and kolachy this Thursday, March 29th from 9 AM until, well, until we’re finished!
Welcome Bishop John – March 4, 2012
The parish was privileged to have our God-loving Bishop John Kudrick celebrate the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great at our parish today. Our pastor, Fr. Sidney Sidor, is resting from a medical procedure this past Friday.
On the 2nd Sunday of the Great Fast Bishop John’s sermon was about rebuilding our relationship with God and the faith of the four friends who lowered the paralytic man from the roof to reach Jesus that led to their friend’s forgiveness of sins and healing.
Following the Divine Liturgy the Bishop visited with the attendees in St. Mary’s Hall then with Fr. Sidor.

Work Day Goals – February 11, 2012
Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever!
Here are the current plans:
- Secure new cabinets to the kitchen wall in St. Mary’s Hall
- Paint new shelves and doors
- Clear supplies from the old shelves
- Hang new shelves
- Move items out of the cabinets by the sink
- Clean and Paint old shelves and cabinets
- The Iconostasis team is expected to be returning between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. If you cannot make the early part of the work day, plan on helping unload the truck following the 5:30 pm vigil Divine Liturgy.
Thank you for your support in helping Beautify Gods House!
Sincerely,
Joe Kupec
Christian Unity Week Presentation
On Tuesday, January 24, 2012 St. Athanasius Byzantine Catholic parish gave an introductory class on Eastern Catholicism to a group of over 50 people in Muncie, IN. Members of 3 Roman Catholic churches were present. The presentation was held at St. Francis of Assisi church which is located beside the college campus of Ball State University.
Introductory remarks were made by Dave Armstrong (adult faith formation coordinator for St. Francis parish) and Henry Peresie (member of St. Athanasius who lives in Muncie.) John Danovich, cantor, led the group in the evening rule of prayer using plain chant.
Henry showed 2 videos: Eastern Catholic Church – an Introduction and A Brief Explanation of the Eastern Catholic Churches. Henry’s presentation continued with church history milestones and different customs in the various Eastern churches in communion with Rome. There was an extensive question and answer session with many queries regarding icons.
Next was a refreshment break including nut and poppy seed rolls baked at St. Athanasius’ kitchen and cookies and soft drinks provided by Mary Armstrong.
Then Father Sidney Sidor, pastor of St. Athanasius Church, kept all the guests mesmerized with his walking through the Proskomedia service (preparation of the gifts), which precedes every Divine Liturgy. Fr. Sidor then explained the 3 Benedictions at each liturgy, the sacraments of the church and the importance of healing and deliverance prayers.
The conclusion was the anointing of all those present with holy oil from our semi-monthly healing service.
One couple informed us that on 9/5/1955 they had attended the first Divine Liturgy celebrated in English at Mount Macrina in Uniontown, PA featuring Archbishop Fulton Sheen and Bishop Nicholas T. Elko. Glen Grabow, Knights of Columbus financial secretary at St. Athanasius, was also present. A follow-up presentation on the Divine Liturgy is likely in the next few months.
