Upcoming Events
The 28th Annual Celebrate Life Dinner is Tuesday evening, September 28th in the Sagamore Ballroom of the Indianapolis Convention Center.  Make your reservation at www.rtlindy.org or call 582-1526.
The Eastern Catholic Men’s Conference will take place on November 13, 2010, at St. John the Baptist Cathedral complex in Parma, OH. Registration deadline is October 22. Cost for adults is $30.00 and includes lunch. For further information and to register go to www.parma.org.

Reminders
Fr. Sidor wants to remind each of us that confession is required at least once a year, at the absolute minimum. At least twice is month is recommended. We are blessed that Father is flexible to hear confessions on any day. Make an appointment today.
We’ve restocked on a large variety of scrip cards. This is an easy way to help with the church fundraising. You have to buy gasoline and groceries every week. If you eat at area restaurants, including fast food, we have a good selection. Also we have pharmacy & general merchandise cards too. We could easily be selling $1000 in scrip every week if you participate. Talk to John if you have questions.
There’s a vast selection of religious books and some icons for sale at the church too. We are to grow in our spiritual faith every day. In addition to the daily readings on the church calendar and listening to Fr. Sid’s sermons you should put the TV remote down and read a spiritual book. It will do wonders for your mind and soul. In this world of bad news and turmoil, turn to God. These books will certainly help.

Cell Phones
We leave the secular world when we enter the church building. It is a holy place for worshipping God. To maintain this sacred environment you must prevent your cell phone from distracting anyone. Turn your cell phone off. If you are expecting an urgent call then mute the ringer. Never answer the phone while in church but take it outside before answering it. Remember, when worshipping God we’re on his time – not ours – and we should be giving Him our undivided attention. Do everything in your power to prevent distracting the church community who are actively participating in common prayer to our gracious Lord.

Saturday’s Work Day
Thank you to all the volunteers who worked diligently on the parish campus on September 11. Look at the bulletin board in St. Mary’s Hall to find the items marked in green to see what was accomplished. Paul & Mary Whitener from St. Nicholas parish in Munster, IN and their friend, Jay Krager came down to Indy to help the parishioners. May God grant them many years! If you didn’t make it you missed a good pork lunch.
Also thanks to Al Z. and Richard M. who helped with the baking & wrapping on Thursday. Notice that this week we will be baking on Friday. The Carmel Market inspectors are coming that day so we’re accommodating their schedule.

2nd Collection
Bishop John Kudrick has requested that we have a collection for those who’ve been afflicted by the natural disaster in Pakistan. Thank you for those who shared their bounty last week. Please be generous this week.

Birth of the Theotokos
When we celebrate the birth of the Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Our Lord and God, we also celebrate her parents, Joachim and Anna. We are grateful to Mary for being so ready to do God’s will. We are grateful to her parents, who raised her to be faithful and obedient to God. Her birth, like her life and death is directed to our Lord Jesus Christ. She said, “Yes” to give birth to our Savior Jesus Christ. Will we give birth to God the Word in our hearts, minds and souls?
Are You Interested?
Fr. Sid wants to know who is willing to be an Epistle Chanter, a member of a new Benedictine Oblate Group, or would like to attend a Life in the Spirit seminar at our parish. Talk to Fr. Sid or John D.
Saturday’s Work Day
The St. Athanasius Maintenance Department invites all Knights of Columbus members and able-bodied members of the parish to the September 11 Service Day, from 8 am to 4 pm.  Service to our community is a fitting memorial to those lost in defense of our country. We are going to push for closing out a number of outdoor maintenance activities on the Church, Hall, Rectory and Garage.  Bring your old clothes, gloves, a hat, and a friend. A recent visitor to our parish from Muncie, Indiana is planning to attend. Come and work side-by-side with our gracious visitor.

Healing Service
Thank you to those who attended last week’s healing service and four Paraklis services during the Dormition Fasting period. We’re sure you were enriched with many blessings that flow from these special services. Please note that there is another Paraklis scheduled for Wednesday, August 18. Also mark on your calendar that a 2nd healing service this month will be offered on Wednesday, August 25. Plan to come pray and take advantage of these ancient services, which are part of our rich heritage. Invite your friends and introduce them to Byzantine Ruthenian Rite of the Eastern Catholic Church.
Food Pantry
We would like to start now creating an inventory of non-perishable foods and personal hygiene items for our brothers & sisters in Christ who are in need. Each Sunday there will be a box for you to place these items in the back of the church. On your next trip to the grocery use your scrip cards purchased at St. Athanasius parish (hint, hint) to get some things for the food pantry. Thank you for your generosity and fulfilling the bible passage in Matthew 25:35.

Woman’s Conference
The 7th annual Indiana Catholic Women’s Conference is scheduled for September 18th. It is being held at The Performing Art Center at Cathedral High School. Fr. Sid will be hearing confessions at the conference. Please mark this event on your calendar.

Dormition
The Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated this upcoming Saturday (vigil Divine Liturgy) and Sunday, August 15. The traditional rule for the Dormition Fast is a strict abstinence this week thru Saturday, August 14. On the Dormition feast day we bless flowers (because flowers were discovered in her tomb after her body was taken into heaven), herbs (used for medicinal purposes in the summer heat which was conducive to many infectious diseases), and plants.
The annual eparchial pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Mariapoch in Burton, Ohio starts with opening liturgy on Saturday, August 14 at noon. It concludes with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 15 at 3:30 p.m. For more details see http://www.mariapoch.org/pilgrimage2 or ask at the rectory.

Woman’s Conference
The 7th annual Indiana Catholic Women’s Conference is scheduled for September 18th. It is being held at The Performing Art Center at Cathedral High School. Fr. Sid will be hearing confessions at the conference. Please mark this event on your calendar.
Fund Raising
Thanks to Bill F. & Marge H. for preparing the hall prior to Thursday’s bake day. Al Z., his grandson Alex, Harry & Cherie K., and Courtney helped John bake on 8/5. Michelle O. & Marge H. helped label & wrap the 85 rolls & 4 trays of pumpkin logs over 2 evenings – yes, wrapping is a very big job. Danny E. cleaned the hall. It was a nice group effort. Joe K & Richard M hung drywall in the storage building during the sweltering heat this past Wednesday. The markets on Saturday, 8/7, did well thanks to the efforts of Danny E., Paul S. and John D. God grant our volunteers many blessings for your hard work.
There’s a good selection of scrip cards & certificates for sale so ask John for your favorite vendors scrip.

August Feast Days
The Transfiguration of Our Lord is commemorated on August 6th (Friday of this week). This is a solemn holy day and we will have a vigil Divine Liturgy on Thursday too. The Feast of the Holy Transfiguration is linked to the harvest of the first-fruits of the season. It is customary to bring grapes and other soft-fruits to church to have them blessed to express gratitude to God for all things. (You can bring garden vegetables too.) Why grapes? Grapes represent 1) transformation, 2) new life and 3) Holy Gifts:

  1. Grapes transform from buds to flowers into fruit, fruit into juice, and juice into wine. In the Divine Liturgy wine transforms mystically into the Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
  2. Grapes represent new life on old vines.
  3. Grapes also symbolize a good harvest as a gift from God. St. John Chrysostom wrote, “The farmer receives fruit from the earth not so much because of his labor and diligence, but because of goodness of God, Who grows this fruit, because neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase (1 Cor. 3:7).”

The Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated on August 15th. The traditional rule for the Dormition Fast is a strict abstinence from August 1 thru August 14, with the usual mitigation (wine & oil) for Saturdays and Sundays and the Feast of the Transfiguration. The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season. The observance of this fast is voluntary.

Sunday Brunch – today
The monthly brunch served by the Knights of Columbus James J O’Brian Council 13850 is today. While others may be at the Brickyard 400 you can enjoy great company right here. Please stay and enjoy some of the very popular, but rarely found ethnic foods in Indianapolis: pirohi with sautéed onions, kielbasa & sauerkraut and other goodies like pancakes, eggs, hash browns, etc. There will be a 50-50 raffle so participate for the chance at winning some cash.
Your parish needs you
Set aside July 31st so you can attend the work day and a joyous meal this upcoming Saturday. There is plenty to do both inside the various buildings as well landscaping work outdoors. (I’m confident that the weather will be better than this past week’s high humidity days in mid-90s.) Joe’s list of items is on the bulletin board. Review it today. Joe states, “We plan to have a pitch in cookout at the end of the day to celebrate all of our accomplishments.” So plan to come and bring something refreshing to the meal. Thanks for sharing your time and talent in addition to your tithe here at the loving parish of St. Athanasius.
Fund Raising
The Scrip cards that were sitting on the delivery truck last weekend have come in. Check with John to see which cards we have available.

Announcements
Blessing of Vehicles
A long standing tradition in the Eastern Church is a special blessing for modes of transportation in commemoration of St. Elias’ feast day on July 20th. Recall that St. Elias or Elijah ascended into heaven on a fiery chariot. He is the Patron of drivers and the protector of the means of transportation. Take advantage of this extra protection (you need car insurance in Indiana and you really could use Divine protection even more!)  Keep in mind that the blessing of 1st fruits and flowers fall on feast days in August so keep gardening.

Welcoming Committee
Our parish could benefit from a few parishioners who greet people at the door to assist them with the liturgy & hymn books. Some visitors could use some direction during the liturgy to follow along with our beautiful service so you should offer to sit with them. Please consider being a helping hand to our visitors. We will get a schedule posted in St. Mary’s Hall. Thank you.
Knights of Columbus
The monthly brunch served by the James J O’Brian Council 13850 is next Sunday. Invite your friends, neighbors and co-workers. There will be a 50-50 raffle so participate for the chance at winning some cash.
Fund Raising
Scrip cards were ordered last week. Check with John to see which cards we have available.
