Dormition Icon
The Icon of the Feast of the Holy Dormition is on the front cover of this week’s bulletin.  Many are present at the Dormition of the Beloved Theotokos.  In the foreground we see St. Peter (dressed in plain clothes) incensing the Theotokos’ body and we see St. Paul (also in plain clothes) at the foot bowing in her honor.
Behind the crowd in the background we notice there are three Bishops present.   The bishops traditionally represented are James, the brother of the Lord, First Bishop of Jerusalem and the original author of our Divine Liturgy, Timothy Heirotheus, and Dionysius the Aeroagite.  They are shown wearing episcopal vestments.  Christ is standing in the center looking at His mother.  He is holding a small child clothed in white representing the soul of the Virgin Mary.  With His golden garments, the angel above His head and the mandorla surrounding Him reflects Christ in all of His divine glory.   Above Christ the gates of Heaven are standing wide open waiting to receive their Queen.

  • The Dormition Fast continues through August 14. The traditional rule is a strict abstinence with mitigations for Saturday & Sunday and the feast of the Transfiguration. The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season (Canon 880, § 2). This fast may be observed voluntarily but it is highly recommended for your spiritual & physical wellbeing.
  • The next healing service is this Wednesday, August 10. Invite your friends and family.
  • Monday, August 15 is a holyday of obligation – the Dormition of the Theotokos.
  • Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine in Olympia, WA is on August 12 & 13. If you are traveling to the northwest you may want to add this to your itinerary. Their newsletter is in the hall.

Paraklesis
This ancient ceremony is a service of supplication for the welfare of the living. As we use it here at St. Athanasius parish the Paraklesis is addressed to the Most Holy Theotokos whose intercessions are sought through the chanting of the supplicatory canon together with psalms and hymns. The Greek term, Paraklesis, is found in the bible 29 times. It reveals that it means, “to call to one’s side”. Its usage shows that according to the context, it means to entreat as in “I beseech”, admonish as in “I exhort” and consolation as in “I comfort”. The service was initially composed after the 4th Ecumenical Council, held in 451 in Chalcedon a city of Bithynia in Asia Minor. The Paraklesis was further composed in the 9th & 13th centuries. The Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos is emphasized during the Dormition Fast season.

2nd Collection
Thank you for the $118 collected last week. So far we’ve collected $581 towards the goal of $950 for the replacement of Fr. Sid’s white vestments. We will continue the 2nd collection to help defray the cost of the vestments & other church expenses.

  • The healing service on Wednesday, July 27, is also the feast day of Saint Panteleimon (or Pantaleon.) He was a great Martyr and Imperial physician. He was beheaded about A.D. 303 during the reign of Emperor Maximian.  We have his icon in church & venerate it to ask his intercession for healings.
  • The Transfiguration of our Lord is on Saturday, August 6th. Jesus strengthened the apostles’ faith by showing His Divine Glory after He had foretold about His Passion. Father Sid will be blessing first fruits on the solemn feast and on Friday evening, August 5th.

Fund Raising
We have some beautiful, eastern European hand-painted icons on wooden eggs. These would make a unique addition to your home or gift for a special person in your life. New scrip merchandise / gift cards came in this week so there’s a great selection. You have to buy gas, groceries, pharmaceuticals, clothing, etc. on a regular basis so buy some scrip cards for those purchases. It helps generate some income for your parish. There’s also restaurant, hardware, health & beauty cards too.

2nd Collection
Fr. Sid needs to replace his white vestments. So far we’ve collected $315 towards the goal of $950 so we’re 1/3 of the way there.  Please help us replace the Sunday vestments that he’s worn routinely for 7 years.

The State of Indiana insists that each vehicle has liability insurance but what about spiritual insurance. Come on the 20th and have a special blessing bestowed upon your auto, skateboard, hot air balloon, etc. that you journey safely during your travels.
  • The next Knights of Columbus Brunch will be on July 24 following the Sunday Divine Liturgy.

Volunteers
Thanks to those who have helped around the parish in the last week. For example, neighbors Hilda and Dawn who’ve been cutting the grass; Al Z from St. Christopher’s parish that helped with the bake day on Thursday.  Also parishioners who’ve: provided snacks for Sunday socials & theology class, helped clean up after others, helped wrap baked goods, donated food to the food pantry, sold bake goods at the markets, gave a tour to an engineering firm thru the old school building to get proposals for environmental clean-up. We need help weeding the garden on the east side of the church, mop the kitchen floor, and help prepare for the markets on Friday evenings. Make time on your schedule and let the rectory know what you can do. This is your parish. Tell us what you see that needs to be done. Thanks for your ideas & assistance.

Upcoming Events

  • The Apostles Fast starts this evening and lasts until June 28.  It is recommended that we observe strict abstinence on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season (Canon 880, 2). This fast may be observed voluntarily. Here’s more detail on fasting.
  • The ancient Healing Service is this Wednesday, June 22nd. Invite those who wish to be anointed and have hands laid on them. Have faith and expect a healing!
  • Friday, June 24th is a solemn holy day for the Birth of John the Baptist. Vigil Divine Liturgy on Thursday, June 23rd, will be at 5:30 PM. Divine Liturgy on Friday, the feast day, is 11 AM.
  • Saturday, June 25th, is a work day at the parish. All hands on deck! Come and help with our various projects.
  • Wednesday, June 29th is a holy day of obligation for the feast of Saints Peter & Paul.
  • A new class has been added to our schedule – Patristic Theology. The initial class is Tuesday at 6 PM.
  • Lawrence Township is having a 4th of July celebration and carnival from Saturday July 2 through July 4th at the Ft. Benjamin Harrison Finance Center. The finale will be a fireworks show that Mike Piland & crew choreographed.  Ask Mike Piland for details about this family event.

Fund Raising
Thanks to those who helped with baking, wrapping & working the markets this week: Al Z, Alex, Mary, Richard M, Danny E, Carol L, Paul S & John D. The 2 weekend markets had $353 in sales despite the rainy Saturday morning – God is good. There will be more baked goods made on Wednesday. Come for a few hours to help us in our evangelizing effort and, at the same time, bringing needed income to our parish! More scrip cards came this week: clothing store, gas, grocery, pharmacy and restaurant cards.

Thank you!
