Why go to confession?
Confession or Penance is the act of acknowledging our offenses to God.  While this can be done privately and should be done privately on a daily basis after a daily examination of conscience; it also must be done orally to one trained and consecrated to God.  “Why,” You ask, “Is it so important to go to confession?”
Suppose a King wished to give you a gift of rare and very expensive oil, one drop of which could heal all infirmities and protect your health. But the only vessel you had available was filthy. It had accumulated all sorts of dirt and had an unbearable stench.  Would you refuse the king’s gift, because you had no other vessel to put the oil or would you try to clean it?  What if it was in such disrepair it would be virtually impossible for you to clean and repair it yourself.  You would be forced to go to one trained or dedicated to restoring old vessels in disrepair.
You see the filthy vessel is our soul, the King; Jesus Christ, the rare and precious oil that heals is the Holy Spirit.  The trained restorer of old vessels is the priest.  Because it is necessary to seek one trained in cleansing passions, it is important to choose a good confessor who understands passions.
When our souls are filled with sin they are full of filth, there is no room for the Holy Spirit to reside. It is necessary, if we wish the Holy Spirit to reside in us, to make room by cleansing the passions or weeding the garden of our soul. As a result, the Fruit of the Spirit may grow within us so that we may continue our journey of theosis (to become god-like.)
Icons
St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church kindly accepted two icons that graced our church until we installed our new iconostasis from St. Gregory’s in Lakewood, Ohio. Our new icon screen includes both the Resurrection and Nativity icons. Therefore our pastor, Fr. Sid Sidor, offered our older icons to the Roman Catholic parish that we’ve been partnering with for many years. See pictures and article written by Fr. Christopher Roberts in the St. Alphonsus’ bulletin.

Iconostasis
The new icon screen continues to be improved.  The trim was added, nails heads were covered, and the majority of the wood was re-stained. Coating the cherry wood with oil still needs to be done. Please thank Bishop John who has entrusted the iconostasis to our parish. Thanks to all the parishioners who’ve donated their time. It’s great to see so many people take ownership in their parish to help beautify our church.
The Great Fast
While fasting from food is important, many things in our ever challenging world can become damaging to the soul.  Whatever we deem to be more important than our relationship with the Triune God puts our salvation at risk.  Some examples might be:  money, therefore we should tithe properly or give alms; TV, computers, video games, sports etc. might be another competitor from which we might fast.  We should make a greater effort to attend and participate in the Presanctified and All Souls Liturgies and to spend more time in prayer, so that our relationship with God might be healed or improved.   “O my soul, devote yourself to repentance and unite yourself to Christ in mind.  Cry out and groan, Pardon my terrible deeds, that I may receive from you, who alone are good, forgiveness and eternal life.”  May you have a great and joyful fast!

Healing Testimonials
We have 2 testimonials as a result of Wednesday evening’s healing service on 2/22/2012. Jim Yowell’s right knee is working normally. This happened Wednesday while he was in St. Mary’s Hall following the service. Jim was praying for others at the service and not specifically for himself. But in God’s abundant love He healed Jim from his long-time limp due to a joint/muscle problem!
Judy Ernst stated in an email to Father Sid: “My colleague Sara, who we prayed for last night (her husband Steven, diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension) and was weeping yesterday, is smiling and upbeat today.  She said that yesterday evening at about 7 PM she began to feel hopeful (6:30 PM is when I wrote their names on the paper that we prayed from) and she continued to feel more peaceful and strengthened in Spirit through 9:30 PM …….able to sleep well through the night.  Friends and family visited yesterday and brought Steven hope and Sara support and love. Sara said that Steven is not the same person today as he is not as discouraged and is wanting to live instead of facing death.  Sara too is hopeful and said that a miracle occurred and knows that it is answered prayer.”
Please thank God for His wonderful healings and thank Mary, the Theotokos, for her intercession. Continue to pray for all those who have attended our healing services that their petitions be answered.
Events Calendar

  • Wilderness to the Promised Land: The Pilgrimage of the Church will be presented by the Byzantine Catholic Cultural Center at St Nicholas Church in Munster, IN on Sunday March 11 1-6 PM.
  • 3rd Annual Men’s Retreat, “In Weakness, Power Reaches Perfection”, Akron, OH March 16-18.

Iconostasis
As you can see in church today the new icon screen is installed. Bishop John Kudrick has entrusted it to our parish after St. Gregory’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Lakewood OH was closed. To complete the project there is some trim work installation, more staining and coating the wood with oil. That work will commence this week. You can help on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Please inform the rectory when you plan to come. Thanks to all the parishioners who’ve donated their time to help beautify our church.
The Great Fast
Here are suggestions for what you should be doing during the Lenten season:
1) Pray – talk to God. He will listen and respond. Say prayers from your heart as well as a prayer book.
2) Go to Church – not only on Sundays but to Presanctified Liturgies and All Souls Saturday services.
3) Repentance – repair your relationship with God. Accept that you can do better then strive to do so.
4) Fast – discipline yourself spiritually in what you do as well as what or how much you eat
5) Read – the Bible and other spiritual books. We have a wealth of good books for you to purchase.
6) Alms – give to those in need. Ask yourself if you’re giving of your time, talent and treasure to those in our community for the glory of God. To discuss these points in more detail please talk to Father Sid.

Events Calendar

  • The Great Fast begins Monday February 20. Next Sunday is the last day before Lent. Our tradition is to have everyone bring in a meatless dish to share with others. During the Great Fast we make a resolution to refrain from certain foods like meat and dairy. On Cheesefare Sunday we are saying goodbye to dairy. Typically people make something to use up their milk, yogurt, sour cream, cheese, etc. Bring one of your favorite meatless soups, salads, appetizers, casseroles, or desserts.
  • The captivating Patristics Theology class is not being held this week so the parish can focus on the icon screen renovation. The class will resume on Tuesday, February 21 at 6:30 PM.
  • The next Ancient Healing Service will be on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 PM.

Thank You
Thanks to the crew who traveled to Lakewood Ohio to disassemble, package and transport St. Gregory parish’s iconostasis to our parish. Thanks to our Bishop John Kudrick for giving us the beautifully hand-written icon screen, Fr. Richard Plishka for coordinating access to St. Gregory’s church and our pastor Fr. Sid for graciously accepting the Bishop’s generous gift. We appreciate those who prepared the church on Saturday to place the icon screen prior to its installation. Today parishioners are asked to help unload the panels & trim that will be reassembled and installed in our church in the upcoming week. If you set aside time this week to assist beautifying our place of worship please contact Max Beaver, Fr. Sid or the parish office.
Thanks to those who attended the first All Souls Saturday. The remaining dates in 2012 of All Souls Saturdays are Mar 3, Mar 10, Mar 17 and May 26. Please schedule these dates on your calendar to attend the 9 AM liturgies where each family’s deceased loved ones are named. Your loved ones are depending on your prayers. Fr. Sid wants to see more attendance on these special dates set aside for that purpose.
On Saturday volunteers freshened flowers in the church, cleaned the hall, prepared kitchen cabinets for a new coat of paint, and installed hardware on newly painted cabinets. They were well fed by the Kupecs too. If you weren’t there you missed halupki, pirohy, sour dough bread, veggies, plum pudding – just to name a few.

Announcements
Welcome visitors
To our out-of-town visitors we appreciate you coming to our parish to worship God with us. We hope that you are having a great visit to Indianapolis and that you have a fun time with your family or friends in our hospitable town. We invite you to stay for brunch in St. Mary’s Hall following Sunday morning’s liturgy.  Before you leave the parish today, or town in the next few days, we want you to know that we have nut, poppy seed, and various fruit rolls plus pizzelles, kolachy, kifli and biscotti for sale. Get some for your festivities. Also please browse though our bookstore on display in St. Mary’s Hall. Thank you for coming.
All Souls
The first All Souls Saturday is this week on February 11th.  Since we are remembering the deceased individuals of your family by name Fr. highly recommends that everyone make a special effort to attend these liturgies so that you can pray for your departed loved ones. Dates of 2012 All Souls Saturdays: Feb 11, Mar 3, Mar 10, Mar 17 and May 26. For those who don’t know, the concluding part of All Souls Saturday liturgies is called the Panachida or Memorial Service for the Faithful Departed. Each family’s deceased loved ones are named. If you have new departed loved ones that you would like included please submit them to the rectory office. (You don’t have to submit a new form if nothing has changed since last year.)

Iconostasis
Bishop John Kudrick has offered the icon screen from St. Gregory’s parish in Lakewood OH to our parish. Volunteers from the Indianapolis area will be delivering it to our church on Saturday evening. We could use your help unloading the icon screen and other items. Please come to Saturday’s 5:30 PM liturgy and plan to stay afterwards to assist placing the items into the church. The beautifully hand-written iconostasis will replace our existing iconostasis, which has served us well. We want to thank Al Macek and Glen Grabow, 2 of the original 4 founding parish families, for their dedication of time and money in building and enhancing our existing iconostasis. God grant Al, Glen and our volunteers happy and blessed years!

2011 – 2012 Stewardship Appeal
The 2011-2012 Stewardship Appeal started in the fall.  We’ve collected $175 of our parish’s goal of $1,400 so it’s time to pick up the pace. If you have not received a mailing from the eparchy please contact the rectory so we can supply you with the pledge paperwork. If you would like to be chairperson for the appeal please contact Father Sid.  Please help Bishop John by pledging funds to his important projects.
Events Calendar

  • The Patristics Theology class is Tuesday at 6:30 PM. Father is teaching how to deal with Satan.
  • This month’s work day is next Saturday, January 21. We’ll be sure to have indoor projects now that winter has arrived. We can use your talent between 9 AM and 4 PM. Lunch will be served.
  • The Knights of Columbus Brunch is scheduled for Sunday, January 22, following the Divine Liturgy. Invite visitors to dip themselves in the beautiful Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and then enjoy fellowship & food in St. Mary’s Hall. It’s only 1 week away.
  • The first Ancient Healing Service in 2012 was filled with praise, blessings and goodwill. Thank you to those who participated. Please place the next one on your calendar: Wednesday, January 25 at 7 PM.

House Blessings
The new Jordanwater was blessed on January 6th. It is our tradition to bless all parishioners’ homes in the few weeks following the celebration of Theophany. Please let the rectory know when you’re available to have Fr. Sid bless your home.  Use the House Blessing form in the back of the church.
 Special Intention Liturgies
Fr. is available to celebrate a liturgy during the week on behalf of your special intention. It can be for a new job, healing, prosperity, anniversary, birthday, deceased member of the family, etc. A typical stipend is $10. Call to arrange a liturgy that is at a convenient time for you so that you can attend.

Paraklesis
This is one of the first devotions to the Blessed Mother. Our parish is unique in that we celebrate this full, rich supplication to the Theotokos each week. Set aside your Monday evenings to celebrate the Paraklesis.

Remember
Envelopes & 2012 calendars are in St. Mary’s Hall. Pick up yours today. We’re using the 2011 envelopes for 2012 since we want to use our existing supply and save a portion of a tree.
