  • We welcome Father Christian Kappas who is concelebrating with Fr. Innocenti at Saturday’s vigil Divine Liturgy on April 13. Thank you Father Kappas for being with us again. May God grant you many blessed years!
  • Please note on this week’s schedule that there is no Saturday vigil Divine Liturgy on April 20. Father Innocenti has another commitment on that day.
  • The next Ancient Healing Service is Wednesday, April 24 at 7 PM. We had 2 good reports to celebrate at our 4/10 service. Bring your acquaintances to have our parish community pray with them.
  • The Knights of Columbus Brunch is scheduled for Sunday, April 28. It will follow the 10 a.m. Divine Liturgy. What are the knights serving? Come on the 28th and see.
  • On Pentecost Sunday, May 19th, the price of the large 6-day candles will be raised from $5 to $10 each. We light them for our prayer intentions whether it’s for deceased member(s) or for a special intention or in thanksgiving for God’s hearing our past petitions. These are the same reasons that a request for a Divine Liturgy is made. A stipend for the Divine Liturgy is $10 so starting on May 19 the candles will be the same price as a Divine Liturgy stipend.

Parish Prayer
Oh God the benefactor of our souls, Grant that by the prayers of St. Athanasius our parish patron,
We may be blessed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Grant that our community would grow in Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Piety, Knowledge and Fear of the Lord.  Grant that our community would grow in Charity, Faith, Prudence, Hope, Justice and Temperance.
Oh Confessor and Bishop Athanasius, you said, “God became man so that man could become like God.” Pray for us that we would grow in Spirit.
Through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos and all the saints, now and forever. Amen.

Fund Raising
The summer farmer’s markets get an early start in spring. The Binford Farmer’s Market is now open on Saturdays from 9 until 1 p.m. In May it moves outdoors but for now it’s indoors at their location at 62nd and Binford Blvd on the northeast section of Indy. Will you help sell at the market on some Saturday mornings? The markets are a very important venue for us to evangelize and bring much needed funds into the parish.
On May 18th the Carmel Farmer’s Market opens so we’ll need more volunteers to represent the parish at 2 markets each Saturday. Please look at your calendar and set aside a few Saturday mornings to help our parish. For now we will continue to make baked goods on Thursdays so we could use more help on those days if you’re not at work. Become part of the fund-raising team. If you have other ideas for the parish to make money to keep us a vibrant part of our community please share your thoughts with Fr. Innocenti, John or Max.

Pascha – Easter Sunday – March 31, 2013

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

Bright Week

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Christós voskrése! Vo-ístinu voskrése! May the risen Christ bestow peace, health and happiness in this joyous season to all peoples of the world; especially St. Athanasius parishioners, guests, friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Our renewed spirit, honed by our diligence during the Great Fast, will continue to strengthen us to spread the Good News of Christ’s victory over Satan. Let us go forth and proclaim to others the truth of the Catholic faith through both word and deed – it’s God’s directive. We have a good God and we have Holy Spirit power! Sow plenty of positive, optimistic seed to all, every day, so that we can foster an upbeat and encouraging community. As we do for others, we do for ourselves. Let’s praise God for all he has done for us.

Bible Meditation (from last year’s bulletin)
Excerpt from “Protection from Deception” by Derek Prince:
Those who accept Satan’s lies do so “because they did not receive the love of the truth … God will send them strong delusion” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11). This is among the Bible’s most frightening statements. If God sends strong delusion, we are sure to be deceived. Condemnation comes to those who “did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (verse 12).
The only way to know whether a sign or wonder is true is to measure it with truth – with the Word of God. In John 8:32, Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Scripture is the sole determinant of truth or falsehood. We are instructed to “test all things; hold fast to that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

Retreat: Fr. Rossi will be on a retreat this week from Monday through Thursday. If you need a priest during that time please contact your nearest Roman Catholic priest.

The Great Fast: While fasting from food is important, many things in our ever challenging world can become damaging to the soul.  Whatever we deem to be more important than our relationship with the Triune God puts our salvation at risk.  Some examples might be:  money, therefore we should tithe properly or give alms; cell phones, TV, computers, video games, sports etc. might be another competitor from which we might fast.  We should make a greater effort to attend and participate in the Friday evening Presanctified Liturgies and to spend more time in prayer, so that our relationship with God might be healed or improved.   “O my soul, devote yourself to repentance and unite yourself to Christ in mind.  Cry out and groan, Pardon my terrible deeds that I may receive from you, who alone are good, forgiveness and eternal life.”  May you have a great and joyful fast!

February Birthdays: Max Beaver, Cyndi Huff, Nicholas Kupec, and Stephanie Suvak. God grant them many years!

  • Parish Council meeting follows today’s Divine Liturgy for the first Sunday of the Great Fast. During the social time in St. Mary’s Hall it will be announced when we’re about to start the meeting.
  • The 2nd All Souls Saturday is being celebrated following the Presanctified Liturgy on Friday, February 22 at 7 p.m. Please attend both services this Friday and stay for a dinner and either a Lenten video or talk.

The Great Fast
Here are suggestions for what you should be doing during the Great Fast (Lenten season):
1) Pray – talk to God. He will listen and respond. Say prayers from your heart as well as a prayer book. “A Prayer Journey through the Great Lenten Fast and Great and Holy Week” is available in the hall. Please use your copy each day during the Great Fast for your private prayer.
2) Go to Church – not only on Sundays but to Presanctified Liturgies and All Souls Saturday services.
3) Repentance – repair your relationship with God. Accept that you can do better then strive to do so.
4) Fast – discipline yourself spiritually in what you do as well as what or how much you eat
5) Read – the Bible and other spiritual books. We have a wealth of good books for you to purchase.
6) Alms – give to those in need. Ask yourself if you’re giving of your time, talent and treasure to those in our community for the glory of God.

  • The Great Fast begins Monday February 11 – a day of strict abstinence (see below.)
  • The first healing service during the Great Fast is this Wednesday. On the same evening we will be commemorating the half year anniversary of +Fr. Sid Sidor passing with the Panachida service. A spaghetti dinner will follow in St. Mary’s Hall. Please invite all those who knew Fr. Sid.

2013 Fasting Regulations
Abstinence – The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat or meat by-products, permitting the use of eggs and dairy products. Abstinence is to be observed on all Wednesdays and Fridays during the Holy Season of the Great Fast and on Holy Saturday. Optional: you could practice this on more than Wednesdays and Fridays.
Strict Abstinence – The law of strict abstinence (fast) forbids the use of meat, eggs and dairy products or any of their by-products. Strict Fast and Abstinence is to be observed on the First Day of the Great Fast, Monday, February 11th and on Great and Holy Friday, March 29th
Dispensation – Pastors may, for a just cause, grant to the individual faithful and to individual families, dispensations or commutations of abstinence and strict abstinence into other pious practices.
The Great Fast
The Great Fast period is a preparation for the greatest feast of the year – Pascha. The forty days symbolize the forty years the Israelites wandered in the desert. The Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts will be celebrated on Fridays at our parish. We will continue to have the Ancient Healing Service on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays during the Great Fast. We’re the only nearby Catholic Church that celebrates the ancient and beautiful Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts for 6 weeks in a row. It’s up to you to choose to take advantage of these services. Encourage others to immerse themselves in this special gift of the Eastern Catholic Church.
“A Prayer Journey through the Great Lenten Fast and Great and Holy Week” is available in the hall. Please use your copy each day during the Great Fast for your private prayer.

Events Calendar

  • The Great Fast begins Monday February 11, nine days earlier than last year. Next Sunday is the last day before Lent. Our tradition is having everyone bring in a meatless dish to share with others. During the Great Fast we make a resolution to refrain from certain foods like meat and dairy. Today some people will be saying goodbye to meat on Meat Fare Sunday. On Cheesefare Sunday, February 10, we are saying goodbye to dairy. Typically people make something to use up their milk, yogurt, sour cream, cheese, etc. Bring one of your favorite meatless soups, salads, appetizers, casseroles, or desserts next Sunday.
  • The first healing service during the Great Fast is Wednesday February 13. On the same evening we will be commemorating the half year anniversary of +Fr. Sid Sidor passing. At the end of the healing service, which was initiated by +Fr. Sid, we will remember him with the Panachida service. Refreshments will follow in St. Mary’s Hall.

Prayer
Why hasn’t God granted my petitions? Be assured that God hears our every prayer. His answer may be ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘Later’. Sometimes we need to humble ourselves, look within, and repent. Go to your bible and read about the hindrances to God giving you what you want: John 9:31; James 4:2-3; James 1:6-7; 1 John 3:21- 22, Mark 11:24-25; Malachi 3:10; Matthew 17: 14-21. Then make amends where necessary.
Great Lenten Fast Book
This week we received booklets for each parishioner. “A Prayer Journey through the Great Lenten Fast and Great and Holy Week” is available in the hall. Please use your copy each day during the Great Fast for your private prayer. The booklets are one of the many things that Bishop John’s Annual Stewardship Appeal pays for. As you saw in the recent Horizons our parish has collected $625 of our $1,400 goal. Please consider how much you’re pledging and submit the cards mailed to you. If you need the paperwork call the rectory.
