• The Circumcision of Our Lord solemn feast day is January 1. The vigil Divine Liturgy will be on Monday evening, December 31, at 6 p.m.
• The Theophany of Our Lord is a holy day of obligation. It falls on Sunday so that liturgy can fulfill both Sunday and the feast day obligations. Although you’ll also want to attend the Saturday, January 5^th’s Divine Liturgy with the splendid blessing of the water. This is a major feast on the church’s yearly calendar and the prayers are beautiful.

 2^nd Collection
This is the final collection of December for the retired religious so please be generous if you haven’t given to this worthwhile fund.
Please remember the sick of the parish and their family & friends. May God’s healing power be upon them. Consider lighting a candle for this intention.
 
House Blessings
It is our tradition to bless all parishioners’ homes soon after the celebration of Theophany. Please let the rectory know when you’re available to have Fr. Innocenti bless your home with the new Jordan water that is being blessed on January 5^th.
Thank You
Fr. Innocenti and the parish wish to thank all those who’ve shared their time, talent and treasure with St. Athanasius church here in Indianapolis during the past year. There are too many kind, Christian acts to recount here but be sure that each and every one is cherished. We’re all benefactors of your works. We look forward to 2013 with faith that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us to fulfill His mission.

Events Calendar

• Christmas caroling in the neighborhood is today: Sunday,
  December 23^rd from 5-7 pm. Get into the holiday spirit
  and help us sing the music of the season.
• Following the midnight Divine Liturgy for Christmas there
  will be a very early morning meal. About 1 a.m. come to
  the hall to share salad, ham, soup, potatoes & cookies. Bring any other covered dish if you’d like. At this time we start to use the seasonal greeting: Christ is Born! The response: Glorify Him! In Slavonic: Christos Razdajetsja! Slavite Jeho!

Rectory Heat
The new furnaces have been installed and are working fine. We’ve started collecting money for the building fund so we can pay back the $8,500 loan from the eparchy. Donations are welcomed and encouraged!

Give a spiritual prayer for Christmas
We have candle gift cards that you can send/give to a loved one, friend, or someone who needs prayers. A single 6-day candle is $5. For an entire month the cost is $25. When giving your donation use the candle envelope in the back of the church. Paired with it, take the candle card to give as a gift.  In addition to the name on the candle envelope please specify a start date if you would like the church to light the candle(s) in front of Jesus or Mary for you on a future date.

• The Christmas cookies sale is being held today, Dec 16 after Sunday’s liturgy from noon until 3. Please help with arrangements.
• Christmas caroling in the neighborhood is only 1 week away: Sunday, December 23^rd from 5-7 pm. A walking route will be established to include St. John the Forerunner, Mary Riggs Neighborhood Center, etc. Practice will follow Monday’s 6 p.m. Paraklisis devotional service.
• Note that the Divine Liturgy for St. Stephen the Protomartyr on Wed., Dec 27 was moved from the evening to 10 a.m.

 Rectory Heat
Bishop John has graciously loaned our parish $8,500 from the Parishes Together Fund to have a forced air heating system installed in the rectory. This replaces the corroded and fire damaged boiler. The Bishop has approved a $1,500 insurance deductible payment to the parish from the general fund. God grant Bishop John Kudrick and the members of the Parishes Together Board peace, health & happiness for many years!

• St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church’s confirmation class is attending our liturgy on Sunday December 9^th. Welcome! Following liturgy there will be a short presentation, a Q&A session and a meal to share. In commemoration of his feast day on Dec. 6, St. Nicholas will visit too.
• The Christmas cookies sale will be held on Dec 16 after Sunday’s liturgy from noon until 3. Pick up a flyer in St. Mary’s Hall. We’ll have them for sale today too so you buy them early.
• At the December 6^th parish council meeting it was decided to go Christmas caroling in the neighborhood on Sunday, December 23^rd from 5-7 pm. A walking route will be established to include St. John the Forerunner, Mary Riggs Neighborhood Center, etc. The first practice will follow Monday’s 6 p.m. Paraklisis devotional service. • A parish meeting will be held after Divine Liturgy today Sunday, December 2. Please plan to attend.
• The feast day of St. Nicholas of Myra is on Thursday, December 6th. The Vigil Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 5th at 7 p.m. The feast of Maternity of St. Anna will be celebrated at the Saturday Vigil Divine Liturgy at 5 p.m. and next Sunday’s Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m.
• On Saturday Dec 8 baking Christmas cookies will continue. The baking started on Dec 1. The official sale is on Dec 16 after Sunday’s liturgy from noon until 3. Please pick up some flyers and distribute them on your side of town. Encourage pre-ordering so we can have enough cookies on hand. We will be taking them to the markets before and after the 16^th until they run out. We could use your help either baking in St. Mary’s Hall kitchen or selling at 3 markets in December. Ask John.

Phillips Fast
We are in the midst of the 40-day St. Phillip’s Fast in preparation for Christmas. During the fast it was the custom to observe a strict abstinence on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and a lesser abstinence on Tuesday and Thursday. The fast is observed more strictly from December 10 (in some traditions) or from December 20 (in other traditions), with daily strict abstinence, and a mitigated abstinence (wine & oil) on Saturday and Sunday. This fast may be observed voluntarily, partially or in its entirety.

• The Entrance of the Theotokos solemn feast day is Wednesday, November 21^st, the day before Thanksgiving Day. A vigil Divine Liturgy will be celebrated this Tuesday, November 20^th at 7 p.m. There will be no services on the 21^st through the 24^th.
• On Saturday Dec 1 and 8 we will be baking Christmas cookies for sale on Dec 9 and 16. The start time for baking will be discussed at today’s church social. Also preparations of food for the meal on Dec 9 will be started on Dec 8^th. Sign up tohelp on that day.

• The next ancient Healing Service is this Wednesday, November 14^th at 7 p.m. Call your friends and encourage them to bring family & acquaintances to this powerful service introduced by Father Sid.

Since this will be the weekend following St. Nicholas’ feast day on the 6^th we plan to have a Christmas theme for the social in St. Mary’s Hall.

Fund Raising
Our website can now accept credit cards again! Currently anyone can donate money to the church and order bake goods via the website. We’re likely to add a page where people can pay to have a candle lit in our church for their intention. Encourage friends to visit the website and use the donate button.

• Starting today we will be praying for the parish to grow in the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. Copies of the St. Athanasius parish prayer are in the church and hall. We ask that each person say this prayer daily – many times a day, if you wish. It will be used at the end of each of our liturgical services too. As we grow in the Holy Spirit we will see God’s abundant graces bestowed upon our parish family.
• The solemn feast day for the Archangel Michael and All Holy Angels is Thursday, November 8. There will be a vigil Divine Liturgy on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. to celebrate the feast.
• The next ancient Healing Service is Wednesday, November 14^th at 7 p.m. Call your friends and encourage them to bring family & acquaintances to this powerful service introduced by Father Sid.
• There are many work projects to do around the church. If you can make some time to help on a work day please suggest a day so we can schedule it to meet your needs. If you see something to be added to the project list call the rectory. A list will be posted in the hall next week.

November Birthdays
In Father Sidor’s family daughter Laura Gillespie and granddaughter Elizabeth Sidor have birthdays this month. His son, Robert, and wife, Lisa, are celebrating their wedding anniversary. Locally Katherine LaFaver-Cabe, Kevin Zahn and John Danovich have birthdays. God grant your servants peace, health and long life for many blessed years!
2012 – 2013 Stewardship Appeal
This year’s theme is “Preparing for Assembly.” Our parish’s goal is $1,400 – the same as last year. We have $525 pledged so far – more than a third of the way there. The money supports many vital eparchial programs. If you have not received a mailing from the eparchy please contact the rectory so we can supply you with the pledge paperwork.
