Divine Liturgy change from Thursday to Wednesday

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

The Divine Liturgy celebration of the Birth of the Theotokos has been moved from Thursday to Wednesday. The vigil Divine Liturgy will be at 6 PM on Wednesday, September 7th. The reason for the change is to better accommodate people who work. Also it helps with the nurses’ schedule who come to the rectory to assist Fr. Sid. Please pass the word along to other parishioners and friends.

Pray for Marcus Loidolt

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

Marcus Loidolt, one of the parish’s cantors, had surgery for a burst appendix on Saturday. He is listed in critical condition because of the infection. Marcus was having abdominal pain from mid-week. He and his wife Kimetha are visiting relatives in Minnesota.
Please keep Marcus and his family in your prayers. May our Lord grant swift healing to his servant, Marcus. May the Holy Spirit send down special graces upon him and his family. Let their guardian angels envelope them with spiritual armor to ward off Satan and his demons and cast out any doubts about God’s abundant healing power. Thank you Father for the healing. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Healer and Redeemer.

Wow! We had a great turnout and a sizable list of accomplishments on Saturday.  This is a partial list: Broken light fixtures replaced in hall, cleaning in the church (wash pews, kneelers, baseboards, icon screen, brass candle holders, litia or artoklasia tray, censer; vacuum carpet; removed wax from various surfaces), hang icons, move stored pews into hall and back porch of rectory for use (the process included removing 40 years worth of dried chewing gum from under each pew then washing and waxing), organize items in storage building & St. Mary’s hall, cleaned & moved cooling rack for baking from storage into hall for use, sautéed onions for next week’s KofC brunch, folded Sunday’s music handout & bulletins, pull weeds around entrance of hall.
The work was performed between the morning and evening liturgies.  Most of our 19 volunteers attended the morning and/or evening Divine Liturgies too!

Get your rolls for Easter

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

On April 2, 2011 we started selling at our first farmer’s market of the season. Binford Farmers Market at 62nd & Binford Blvd on the northeast side of Indianapolis has easy access & lots of parking. At this time of the year the market is held inside so the outside weather shouldn’t stop you from coming by on Saturday mornings to get your rolls. You won’t see the canopies in the parking lot until May 7th. We ran out of pumpkin logs but we’ll have more next week. We baked a limited supply of strawberry and strawberry cream cheese rolls so get yours now. Please note that we will not be at the market on April 30th because we’ll all be at our church for a wedding!
We’ve made our first batch of paska (pascha) bread at the end of March and will continue baking them while orders are called/faxed in. Please place your order prior to Thursday, April 14th. Otherwise you may be out when you come by. Our last ship date prior to Easter is April 19th.
You can always pick up rolls, paska bread, kolachy, pumpkin logs, and biscotti at the church. Just call 632-4157 and let us know when to expect you.  We’re happy to bake special request orders but it may take a week or more. Thank you for your interest and may God bless you during this Great Fast (Lenten) season.

St. Thomas Parish Visits St. Athanasius

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

Fr. Joseph Pesola, pastor, and about 35 of his parishioners made their Lenten Day trip to St. Athanasius parish on Saturday, March 19, 2011. The event included lunch, presentations, question and answers, and Divine Liturgy.
Henry Peresie was the main presenter of Easter Catholicism showing multiple videos, giving talks and answering many questions from the interested audience. Fr. Sid also provided detailed information and answered questions. John Danovich gave a talk on icons.
The vigil Divine Liturgy was celebrated at 4 PM. Joe Kupec described what to expect and informed the participants what was happening while the Liturgy of Preparation was being performed at the side altar. Fr. Joe concelebrated with Fr. Sid. Deacon Frank Klauder from St. Thomas, Henry Peresie and Kevin Zahn assisted at the altar. Joe & John led the guests and attending parishioners in the Lenten hymns and liturgy responses.
The lunch was served by Danny Enciso, Max Beaver, Marge Hays, Paul Suvak, Richard Medwig, Joe Kupec, Mike, and John Danovich. Thanks to those who made and serve the food and cleaned up afterwords.
Pictures will be posted soon. See a few pictures at St. Thomas’ website.

Work Day Goals – Saturday, February 26, 2011

Published by Saint Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church

Glory to Jesus Christ!
Glory Forever!
This Saturday is the first All Souls Saturday.  Lent is not far away!  After Liturgy Saturday morning see if you can volunteer an hour or two to help close out the following projects:
  • Finish lining the bell tower closet with 1/4″ plywood. I have the wood staged against the wall by the garage door.
  • Building the walk way in the hall attic using the long narrow strips of sheeting that I have staged by the  garage door.
  • Moving the shovels and salt out of the rectory porch.
  • Hanging the icons that are leaning against the windows on the walls.
  • Hanging the boxes of icons in the closet in the entry to the church.
  • If the weather is good we can continue to clear the bricks and dirt from behind the garage.  We need to level the ground and remove bricks and roots so the mower can get close to the building.
Max Beaver will be coordinating all activities for the day!
Thank you in advance for all your support from SAMD!
Sincerely,
Joe Kupec
