Yes, the first batch of pascha (paska) bread is out of the oven. Today we made our first batch of six breads for Easter baskets. Each one is decorated with a 3-bar Cross and a weaved perimeter along the top edge. The bakers allow the dough to rise 3 times for more flavor. The citrus, sweet, egg-rich breads, in 3 sizes, with and without raisins, will be available at the Carmel Winter Market on Saturday morning and the church in the afternoon. Please call ahead to reserve yours. We will take orders up until Wednesday, March 20th. Not only good for your Easter basket they make a wonderful centerpiece for your Easter dinner table. Impress your family and friends.
This Sunday, March 3, 2013, the parish is offering a pysanky class following Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. and the enjoyable fellowship social in St. Mary’s Hall. The class will start at noon. We will be teaching and assisting egg decorators of all ages for up to 2 hours so you can concentrate on one or more masterpieces – you can choose to decorate up to 3 eggs. There will a nominal fee of $5 for supplies and you get to take home your egg(s) and handouts. We supply all you need (eggs, dyes, candles, writing utensil, design examples, and advice) so just bring your curiosity, talent and a friend.
Since the dyes can stain you may wish to bring clothes that are not your Sunday’s best, especially for children or those accident prone. (We do have disposable gloves but they are not very practical for this craft.) If you have questions or want to reserve your spot call the rectory at 317-632-4157 on Friday, March 1 from 9 a.m until 6 p.m. or Saturday 2 until 4:30 p.m.
See last year’s post.
Schedule Change – February 2, 2013
A mistake was found in last week’s bulletin. The Saturday evening vigil Divine Liturgy for Meat fare Sunday is 5 p.m. We apologize for the error.
Latest bake goods promotion – February 1, 2013
There are plenty of people gathering together to watch various sporting events. Our baked goods would be a unique addition to the finger food served for these gatherings. We decided that our authentic kolachy is a tasty treat that many people already enjoy so why not introduce them to your guests or hosts. We’ve made 217 this week, 778 in January this year, 363 in January of last year and a total of 6,521 in 2012. This week we sold 4 dozen to one internet customer. You can see that sales are continuing to rise. We thank all our customers, which includes John C who typically buys 10 dozen at a time.
Here’s the flyer: No Kolachy No Watchy
The Carmel Winter market has been extended through the end of March 2013. We will be selling there on Saturday mornings 9 until noon on most weekends, or at the church any day (please call ahead) and over the internet anytime.
We’ve also introduced a healthy frozen waffle made with alkaline water, beans, rolled oats, canola oil, chia seed, stevia and salt. High in fiber and protein they are 100 calories each. Sales doubled from the 1st to 2nd week. This may be a hot seller for 2013. We served them at the Knights of Columbus January 27th brunch and were gobbled up. Currently the “Wonderful Waffles” are only available at the market or at church.
Food Pantry is Nearly Empty – January 30, 2013
By the grace of God we have been providing non-perishable food and personal hygiene goods to the needy in our neighborhood. Currently requests for these items have been much greater than donors to the food pantry. Our supply is woefully low. Currently our cash flow isn’t sufficient for the parish to purchase these supplies.
The next time you come to church (we have 5 days of liturgies in a row this week) please bring some canned or dried goods for the food pantry. If you wish you can use the Donation button above or to the right to send funds and we can purchase some items on your behalf.
See Mat 25:35, Isa 58:10, James 2:14-18, Proverbs 14:31, Hebrews 13:16. Thank you for your generosity.
Sunday Brunch – January 27, 2013
Following Sunday’s Divine Liturgy on January 27, 2013 the James J O’Brian council of the Knights of Columbus is serving their monthly brunch. On the menu:
- salad
- kielbasa & sauerkraut
- pirohi (various flavors of filled-dumplings) & sautéed onions
- eggs
- hash browns
- herb bread
- waffles (non-traditional ingredients make them high in fiber & protein)
- coffee, juice, and milk.
Liturgy starts at 10 am. Brunch is from 11:15 am until 12:45 pm. We ask for a free will donation (suggestion is $6 for adults and $3 for children).
There will be a 50-50 raffle – buy a few tickets for a chance to win cash. Also you can buy our parish’s famous nut rolls (see all the other flavors on the baked goods page), kolachy, biscotti, pizzelles and pumpkin logs. Pick-up prices for baked goods at the church are less than website prices. Come and enjoy the Eastern Catholic liturgy at 10 followed by delicious food starting at 11:15. See you there!

Bake sale at the church – December 18-20, 2012
There is so much interest in buying our bake goods for the Christmas season we’ve decided to post signs in the neighborhood to direct our customers to the church. We will be available from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday of the week before Christmas. It would be best for you to call 317-632-4157 to find out if we have your preference in stock. We will only hold an order for 24 hours so get here quick before we run out. We plan to make more kolachy, potica rolls and pumpkin rolls this week. There will be no baking the week of Christmas. Thanks to all our fans that love our baked goods made in the church hall’s kitchen. Thanks also to all the hard work by our volunteers. God grant them many years in peace, health and happiness!
Donations Needed
Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever!
It is our prayer to identify some donors who can help our parish replace the rectory boiler. 2012 has been a challenge for the parish. We lost our priest, +Reverend Father Sidney Sidor, of blessed memory, in August and also incurred unexpected expenses that have completely drained our savings.
In March 2012 the condensate return system of the rectory boiler failed and was replaced. In the 100+ degree heat in July 2012 we had to replace the broken A/C condenser unit on the hall. Funeral expenses, temporary clergy and moving expenses for our new priest, Fr. Innocenti Rossi, all aided in the depletion of our funds.
We have had some parishioners and the local James J O’Brian council of the Knights of Columbus help with some of the costs.
In mid-November 2012 the boiler in the rectory had a blow-back of flames that scorched plastic components and wiring. The insurance company said that they only cover the repair to those components despite the fact that the boiler, in 3 contractors’ opinions, would not be safe to operate since it has extensive corrosion due to water leakage. Our deductible is higher than the anticipated repair. The source of the leak has not been identified. At this time the status of the flue liner, which could have collapsed, is not known. Therefore we will have to replace the boiler and potentially the flue liner, footing the entire bill.
One of Father Sid’s favorite passages that he taught time and time again is:
Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
The parishioners believe in God’s Word. We have unwavering faith that His Will be done. Thank you Lord for answering our prayers.
In this gift giving time of the year if you could donate money to get the heat back on for our priest’s living quarters and the office area on the first floor of the rectory we will be eternally grateful. Thank you!
This link will take you to our Donate page or you can mail a donation to us:

St. Nicholas Liturgy change – December 5, 2012
The earlier schedule published in the bulletin distributed in church and posted on the website showed the Vigil Divine Liturgy for St. Nicholas of Myra on the evening of the solemn feast. That is not correct. The Vigil Divine Liturgy will be Wednesday, December 5th at 7 p.m. Please forgive me for publishing the incorrect date.
