DESCRIPTION:Life Transfigured by the Light of the East\n\n\n\n\nJoin families from across the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma for a week of faith-focused\, family-friendly fun! This year’s camp programming is inspired by Orientale Lumen\, Pope St. John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter on the Eastern Churches\, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of its publication.\n\nBasic Information\nWhen: Sunday\, August 3rd (4 PM) through Friday\, August 8th (10 AM)\, 2025\nWhere: Cedar Lake Ministries in Cedar Lakes\, Indiana\, near Chicago\nWhat: Daily community prayer\, including the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord\, and opportunities for confession.  Mornings will feature programming stratified by age\, including babysitting available for infants and toddlers. Details are TBD but will relate to this year’s theme. Afternoons will be mostly free\, allowing time for sports\, games\, swimming\, naps\, and socializing.  After dinner\, we’ll gather around the campfire and/or spend time in the rec room playing games and end the day with Compline.\nPrice:\n\n\n$250 per adult (18+)\n$60 per child (4-17)\nFREE for children ages 3 & under\nAdditional fee for lodging upgrades\n\n\nLodging: Registration fee includes basic Bunkhouse lodging\, with private rooms and shared bathrooms. There is limited space in the Bunkhouse which will be assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis.  Available upgrades are: Cabin With Kitchen (+$500/room)\, Cabin With No Kitchen (+$300/room)\, and Hotel-Style Room (+$200/room).  The adjacent RV Park is also an option\, please contact familycamp@parma.org if you are interested in this option before registering.\nFood: All meals are included in the price of registration.

DESCRIPTION:What is the Dormition? \nIt is the falling-asleep of Mary\, and translation into life which is celebrated on August 15th. In preparation for this great feast of the Mother of God\, we observe a two-week period of fasting from August 1-14. \nSo why do we fast before Dormition? \nI love this analogy: In a close-knit family\, news that its matriarch is on her deathbed brings normal life to a halt. Otherwise important things (parties\, TV\, luxuries\, personal desires) become unimportant; life comes to revolve around the dying matriarch. It is the same with the Orthodox family; word that our matriarch is on her deathbed\, should have a similar affect on us. We fast\, not to get what we want\, but to prepare ourselves to receive what God wants to give us. Fasting is intended to bring us to the realization of “the one thing needful.” It is to help us put God first and our own desires second\, if not last. It also serves to prepare us to be instruments of God’s will\, as with Moses in his flight from Egypt and on Mt. Sinai\, as well as our Lord’s fast in the wilderness. Fasting turns us away from ourselves and toward God. It helps us become more like the Theotokos\, an obedient servant of God\, who heard His word and kept it better than anyone else has or could. \nFasting Rule\nOrthodox Christians generally follow the same fast\, as prescribed by the Church. From August 1-14th\, we fast from meat\, dairy\, fish with backbones\, wine and oil. On Saturdays and Sundays are Wine and Oil Days which means on these days the fast is relaxed to permit wine and oil. Of course\, fasting is a spiritual discipline that should be practiced with the oversight and direction of your spiritual father.
