Baked Goods
We baked various goodies on Thursday, January 26, 2012: potica rolls, kifli, kolachy, biscotti, and pizzelles. A busy day for our volunteers. Yes, you can still pick-up rolls at the church or find us at the Winter Market at Carmel City Center. Please call 317-632-4157 to find out if your selection is in stock, schedule a pick-up at the church or have an order ready for you to pick-up at the Saturday market.
How many rolls did we make in 2011? How about:
- 1,175 potica rolls – over 600 of them nut rolls
- 1,016 biscotti – twice as many vanilla/chocolate than cranberry-almond but we didn’t start making cranberry-almond until August
- 4,145 kolachy – nut is #1 and apricot is #2
- 183 pumpkin logs – we just keep rollin’ them – now using pumpkins from a parishioner’s farm
- 1,118 pizzelles – started making these in May
The counts above were as of December 23, 2011.
St. Athanasius creates fresh, homemade baked goods year-round for special occasions, or just because they are so tasty. Nut Rolls, Kolachy, Pumpkin Log, Biscotti, Pizzelles are all available. If you have a special combination of fillings for the rolls (e.g. add raisins and/or lekvar to the poppy seed) just give us a call to see how we can accommodate your wishes. Thanks and God bless you!
NUT ROLLS (a.k.a. Potica, Povitica, Orechovnik, Orevnitza, Orehnjaca, Makoweic, Kaláč, Kolachki, Beigli, Strudla – just to name a few)
Our Traditional Rolls are made with care. They consist of a sweet bread dough (“the dough is so good”) which is rolled around various delicious fillings. Each full roll is approximately 14 inches in length and weights about 1 pound 6 ounces. (Wow, that’s a lot more mouth-watering goodness than many others sell.) Our premium quality rolls are very reasonably priced. Each roll is wrapped and then bagged by hand to lock in the freshness and wonderful flavor. You can keep them in the freezer for many months.
We make the scrumptious dough and walnut, poppy seed, apricot and lekvar (prune) fillings from scratch with all natural ingredients. For example, we finely grind whole poppy seeds and make our popular poppy filling with milk, butter, lemon zest, honey and sugar. We don’t take short cuts like some who use canned “poppy butter” made with corn starch and strange preservatives. The only preservative we add to these fillings is natural honey.
We’ve bought some of our walnuts from Haag Family Farm in Esparto, CA so you can be sure the walnuts in our filling are fresh and healthy.
(Here’s a story on how a family in California used to gather walnuts for their rolls.)

Today I brought in some of the biscotti to give to the three ladies and one man (the chef) who prepare the meals for school. I just went back for lunch and they were raving about your biscotti. The chef, Al, said your biscotti were superior to ones he has gotten from specialty stores. He and other lady said you should consider selling them on QVC. M.D. from PA
Everyone loved them. David, our youngest son who lived in Slovakia for four years, said they were just like the rolls you get in Slovakia. Mary, our only daughter, shared them with her in-laws. Mother-in-law Carol (Slovak) said she especially liked the prune roll. She told Mary it was the best “Lekvar Roll” she ever tasted. P.S. from AZ
Our whole family loves the nut rolls. We first found you at the Binford Farmers Market and went every Saturday to buy a nut roll for the week. Looking forward to receiving this order and I am sure we will be ordering many times during the years to come. J.M. from FL
Thank you for the delicious poppy seed & nut rolls. The only discord from my family was why I didn’t order more! It is Awesome! Actually my family considers itself poppy seed connoisseurs & this rates as the best poppy seed ever! A.T. from OH
